Her aunt had been in tears every single day, losing a noticeable amount of weight.
Her cousin was still recovering in the hospital.
As a result, all the family's burdens fell squarely on her father's shoulders.
Geoffrey Gifford was completely overwhelmed and inevitably short-tempered. Everyone in the house was walking on eggshells, yet they still ended up getting caught in the crossfire.
Vivian Fairchild expertly turned the steering wheel, her voice light. "I can't deny that my actions played a part in all of this."
Just as Grace Gifford was marveling at the fact that she was actually reflecting on her behavior, the woman added coolly, "But I'm the victim here, not the instigator."
She turned to look at Grace, the light in her eyes too intense to meet directly. It looked like a mix of pity and absolute disdain.
"Do you even understand the concept of karma? Let me ask you, if you were the one being harassed and bullied by a man over and over again, how do you think it would end?"
Given the Gifford family's status and Geoffrey's narrow-mindedness, the guy probably wouldn't even know what hit him.
Vivian chuckled softly.
She kept driving.
"People always act like God when they're judging from their own perspective."
If it weren't for the Sterling Family, if the girl Harrison Fowler bullied had just been a normal civilian, the outcome would have been a completely different tragedy.
"Grace."
Vivian called her name. "If you felt even a second of fear when those two guys were cornering you earlier, then you should be able to empathize with every girl who gets harassed for no reason. Instead, you act like being targeted by a man is some sort of twisted honor."
Grace didn't say a word. With tipsy eyes, she stared out the window, her breathing heavy.
The atmosphere in the car was quiet and bizarre.
Neither of them ever thought they would see the day they shared a ride.
Vivian pulled up to Grace's house and said, "You and I never had any real bad blood. The only reason you treat me like an enemy is because I'm the woman standing next to Silas Sterling. But from the day he rejected you, you should have known that there would eventually be someone else by his side, and it was never going to be you."
Whether she resented it or refused to believe it.
Grace was completely absorbed in her own miserable thoughts, so the sudden remark threw her off. "What did you say?"
"I said, don't get my car dirty." Vivian's expression was full of blatant disgust. "You're all snot and tears, and who knows if you're going to throw up. Go inside before you cry."
"You..."
Grace instinctively wanted to curse at her.
But remembering that the woman had basically just saved her life—
If she really cursed her out, it would just prove Vivian's point.
"Thanks for today," Grace muttered, sniffing hard, her face still looking awful. "But don't think I'm going to magically like you because of this. We are still mortal enemies."
"..." Was it really that serious?
Vivian watched her stumble awkwardly out of the car and smiled.
This Grace Gifford was actually much cuter drunk than she was sober.
