“Hehe, what a coincidence. Our last names even sound similar. I’ll remember your name,” Laurel said with a smile. She bent down to meet Elliot’s eyes. “Elliot, you’re very talented. Make sure you teach your friend too.”
Then Laurel looked around at everyone and continued, “Using bamboo weaving to make tools can make life and work much easier. I hope you’ll pass these skills on to any beastmen who need them. You don’t have to ask my permission. Seeing everyone live better is what Sebastian and I wish for.”
The beastmen burst into cheers and applause again, their bright laughter echoing out of the
cave.
Outside the cave, behind a large tree, Wilona stood alone like a statue. She had stayed there the entire day.
She could not hear what was being said inside. She could only see the joy on everyone’s faces and hear waves of cheering.
This was not how she had imagined things would go.
She could not believe it. That wild female newcomer was actually teaching everyone knowledge?
“Like a sage?” Wilona frowned, unease stirring in her chest. “Beastmen like that only exist in legends. I don’t believe it.”
Watching Sebastian feed the little female water one moment and wipe sweat from her brow the next made Wilona’s eyes burn.
“In just one day, she not only captured Sebastian’s full attention, she even won over every beastman here. How is that acceptable? Why does she get to be so loved?” Wilona thought bitterly.
The more she thought about it, the more unwilling she felt to accept it. Gritting her teeth, she walked into the cave.
She pushed through the crowd and stopped in front of Laurel. Reaching out, she snatched the freshly made bamboo basket from Laurel’s hands and examined it as she spoke.
“You wild female are suspicious. You came from nowhere, yet you can make all these strange things. Did you escape from some beast city? Don’t bring trouble to our tribe.”

Her words instantly stirred uncase among the crowd. Everyone turned to look at the little female, waiting for an explanation.
Laurel found herself momentarily at a loss.
Wilona’s suspicion touched on something she truly couldn’t explain. She could hardly say shc was a human who had crossed worlds.
After a brief pause, Laurel answered, “I used to wander on my own. I traveled to many places and learned many things. Teaching what I’ve seen and learned comes from good intentions. I won’t bring trouble to the tribe.”
“A wandering female? Who here actually believes that? How did you survive in the wild? Without family to protect you?” Wilona laughed coldly.
She tossed the basket aside and stepped closer. “Or maybe you did something wrong. Maybe your family cast you out because they didn’t want you anymore.” Her gaze was sharp and provocative.
“That’s not true! I had a family!” Laurel’s eyes instantly reddened. Her voice rose uncontrollably, trembling with hurt.
“They loved me…” Her voice suddenly caught, as if something had seized her throat. Her fingers clenched tightly, nails digging into her palms. “They just … they passed away years ago.”
That single sentence drained all her strength.
The loss of her family was a wound deep in her heart, one that had never healed and hurt the moment it was touched.
Wilona’s malicious speculation was like a rusty key, forcing open a door Laurel had kept tightly locked.
The pain triggered a surge of emotion and silence. Images she desperately wanted to forget flooded back. Deafening explosions, blinding flames, shattered scenes that swallowed her whole.
It felt as if she had been thrown back into that hopeless moment. Overwhelming grief and fear seized her, blurring the line between Wilona standing before her and the cold wreckage of war etched into her memory.
She vaguely wanted to explain. If her family were still alive, she would not have been left wandering. She would not have been found and taken from that scorched land. She would not have been forced into becoming a tool of conflict.

A voice screamed inside her. They never abandoned me. That disaster was an accident. It was not because I did something wrong. It was not my fault.
