Chapter 51 A Better Mother
The red thread tightened instantly, binding the wooden poppet tightly along with several parchments.
The trapped spirit inside the poppet went wild. A blast of freezing air ripped through the room, and the offering table shook violently.
Fruit, snacks, and the candle dish tumbled to the ground.
“Ahhhhh-”
A high, piercing scream tore through the air.
Downstairs, Neoma heard the scream and turned pale with fright. She covered her ears and cried out, “Don’t come for me! Just leave me alone!”
In her panic, the protective sigil slipped from her hand and hit the floor.
A chill shot through her body so deep it felt like she’d fallen into a frozen lake.
“Mommy, it hurts …
“Mommy, I’m your biological child. Please save me. I don’t wanna die. I don’t want to be taken away! Sob … sob …
་་
The child’s innocent sobs suddenly echoed in her ears.
Neoma shuddered violently. Her terrified eyes went blank. She stood up, stepping on the fallen protective sigil without expression, pushed the door, and walked to the kitchen. She picked up a sharp kitchen knife and slowly climbed the stairs to the second floor.
“Stop crying already,” Venus said, walking toward the poppet. “Just be good and listen. I’ll take you where you need to go.”
The poppet went berserk. Pale yellow corpse oil and rotten blood oozed from its eyes, nose, and mouth.
The offering table overflowed, and the toys scattered, flying straight at her.
Venus frowned, ready to strike, when she suddenly felt someone behind her.
She spun around just in time.
A kitchen knife sliced past her shoulder in a blink.

If she hadn’t moved, she’d have been dead on the spot.
“Ms. Day?” She saw Neoma standing there, face blank, knife in hand-clearly taken over by the spirit.
“Where’s your protective sigil?” Venus demanded.
“Don’t hurt my baby!” Neoma screamed in a shrill, broken voice. She raised the knife and swung it straight at Venus’s neck.
Venus didn’t hesitate. She kept her left hand tight on the red thread and grabbed Neoma’s wrist with her right.
But under the spirit’s control, Neoma was freakishly strong. The whites of her eyes darkened until her eyes were pure black-bottomless and terrifying.
“I’ll kill you!”
Neoma was incredibly strong, and the kitchen knife quickly drew near Venus’s neck.
Neoma’s lips twisted into a cruel smile as she swung the knife with all her might.
“Die already!”
Seeing no other choice, Venus reached for Neoma’s throat and squeezed.
“Ahhh!” Neoma screamed in pain.
Venus stayed calm, eyes on the poppet. “If you don’t release her from your control, I’ll kill her.”
The violent wind tearing through the room stopped at once. Everything went silent.
Slowly, the black faded from Neoma’s eyes. When she realized it was Venus’s hand around her neck, she screamed in horror.
“Venus! What are you doing?!”
Venus released her.
Neoma stumbled backward toward the door.
“You were possessed by the spirit,” Venus said flatly. “You almost chopped my head off with that
knife.”
Neoma looked down and saw the knife still in her hand. Her face drained of color. She dropped it fast and started shaking.

“How-how did that happen? Have you caught it yet?”
Venus glanced at the quiet wooden poppet, then back at her. “Yeah. It’s been restrained. But it wants to tell you something.”
“No!” Neoma snapped. “I don’t wanna hear it. Ms. Oracle, take it away. Right now.”
Two dark red tears slid from the poppet’s empty eye sockets.
Venus sigh
and
who truly loves you.”
