"Are you heading back right now? I still have some business to wrap up here."

"Grandma had something come up and left early," Bianca replied, "and I'm really not in the mood to stick around. I'll head back first. Let's grab dinner with your sister when you're free."

"Alright. I'll drop you at the station."

While on the road, Bianca received a horrifying call from the Austin City police.

"Ms. Baldwin, your grandmother has taken Cynthia Quinn hostage on the roof of Mercy Hospital. Please come immediately."

It felt as if a steel spike had been driven straight through Bianca's heart. Her voice trembled uncontrollably. "My grandma? I... I'm on my way back to Austin City right now. Please, just keep her calm! I'll be there as fast as I can!"

Panicking, she dialed Mabel's number over and over, but no one answered.

She called Jax, who picked up instantly.

"Jax," Bianca sobbed, "go to the roof of Mercy Hospital right now. Grandma has taken Cynthia hostage! I'm not in the city—please, you have to get there!"

"I'm on it. I'll be there in five minutes," Jax promised.

On the windy roof of Mercy Hospital, Mabel held a paring knife pressed tight against Cynthia's throat. A thin line of blood was already trickling down her neck.

Cynthia trembled like a leaf. She didn't dare curse, and she didn't dare beg Mathis for help.

Just moments ago, she had cried out "Mathis!" and the blade had dug deeper into her skin.

Mathis was standing a short distance away with the police.
