Jax and Xanthe waited eagerly for her answer.

Xanthe mentally sweated for Milo.

Friday was the night Bianca was supposed to meet up with Milo, and she was really looking forward to it.

She didn't need to be there for her daughter's debut in the Jagger family anyway; Mathis could just take Aveline.

"I have a business trip on Friday," Bianca said smoothly. "Besides, we're getting a divorce soon. There's no point in introducing me. Just take Aveline."

She deliberately omitted that the trip was to Austin City to avoid giving him any ideas. Luckily, she hadn't booked the flight yet, or his invasive background checks would have definitely flagged it.

A heavy lump formed in Mathis's throat. She was determined to sever every single tie with him.

Forcing down his anger, he lowered his voice to sound as reasonable as possible. "You used to complain that I never helped pave the way for your career. Now the perfect opportunity is here, and you're turning it down?

Do you have any idea how many people would kill for a spot at a Jagger family banquet?"

Bianca shot him a cool glance. "Pave the way? If you don't actively sabotage me, I consider it a blessing. My first day at Stellaride, you tried to hand my job over to Cynthia.

If my former boss hadn't stepped in, God knows what dark corner I'd be rotting in right now, waiting for your charity."

Mathis rushed to defend himself. "Back then, I just wanted you to rely on me. Giving Cynthia that position was just a strategy to inflate her ego. It was bait to lure Neville and his backers into Aeterna Dynamics.

You know how that all played out now. Why are you still holding on to that?"

Bianca didn't exactly know why, but she couldn't let go of the past.

Maybe her memory was just too good.

And maybe it was because she knew she would never be his first choice. But she kept that to herself; saying it out loud would only make it seem like she still cared.

Mathis had nothing left to say and ate his food in sullen silence.

His brooding didn't stop the rest of the table from chatting. Bianca cut up Aveline's food, and the little girl proudly wielded her spoon to feed herself.

Aveline had great motor skills; she got a little food around her mouth, but she didn't make a mess.

Still intoxicated by having both her parents present, she suddenly asked if they could all sleep in the same bed tonight.

Mathis immediately said, "Yes!"

Bianca immediately said, "No!"

Aveline looked between them, thoroughly confused. "So... is it yes or no?"

Mathis chimed in quickly, "Daddy says yes. You're going to have to convince Mommy."
