Theodore let out a heavy sigh. "Why did the two of you have to push it this far?"

The doctors rushed in and examined Mathis, focusing heavily on his chest wound. After a tense few minutes, they breathed a collective sigh of relief. "Mr. Jagger is stable now."

Mathis looked utterly bewildered. "What happened to my chest?"

The doctors didn't answer. Theodore waved a hand, dismissing them from the room.

"Grandfather, tell me what happened," Mathis pressed.

Theodore slowly recounted the events of that night.

The day Mabel died, the shock and grief had caused Mathis to collapse. He hadn't woken up after resuscitation and had to be placed on life support.

That very night, Bianca had come to the hospital under the guise of visiting him. The bodyguards, knowing who she was, let her in.

She had pulled out a paring knife and driven it fiercely into Mathis's chest. Hearing the commotion, the guards had burst into the room just in time to stop her from delivering a second strike.

If they had been a second too late, Mathis would have died on that bed.

Mathis squeezed his eyes shut, a suffocating weight crushing his lungs. Why was it that every time he tried to pull her back, he only drove her further into the abyss?

"She tried to kill me," he murmured to himself. "She actually tried to kill me."

Suddenly, panic seized him. "Where is she now? Did the police arrest her?"

Theodore stared intently into his grandson's eyes. "Do you want her to be locked up, or not?"

Desperate, Mathis tried to sit up, only to be hit with a blinding surge of pain in his chest.

"Grandfather, I don't want her in trouble! She's lost all her family! She can't go to prison!"

"You can thank Milo Wilder for that," Theodore replied grimly. "He called me that night. If I hadn't made it in time, the hospital would have already involved the police."

Mathis lowered his gaze, his voice barely a whisper. "Will she ever be willing to see me again?"

Theodore let out a long, weary sigh. "Mathis, it's over for you two. Mabel's ashes were brought back to Kingsbridge City. The funeral is tomorrow."
