The abrupt silence made Juno pause for a second.
Before Juno arrived:
Damian Wright: "Mrs. Corrington! You need to look at this! My son was beaten to a pulp! I know your family is powerful, but we just want justice! This isn't going away without at least a few hundred thousand in compensation!"
After Juno arrived:
"I'm not trying to make a massive scene, I'm just here for an explanation."
Damian kept nervously glancing over at Juno as he spoke.
Juno barely paid him any mind. She poured herself a glass of warm water and noticed Babur sitting off to the side, occasionally shooting looks toward the sofa.
Juno asked him, "Did you beat someone up again?"
"Yeah..."
Juno gave him a side-eye. "You've been wilding out lately."
Getting into a fight was one thing, but having the guy's parents show up at their door was another.
"Manny wouldn't shut his mouth. He was talking trash, and I lost my temper."
Juno arched an eyebrow.
The old Babur after a fight: *I didn't mean to, I know I messed up.*
The new Babur after a fight: *Yeah, I hit him, what about it?*
Gwendolyn was nursing a severe headache.
Juno set her glass down and walked over to her stressed mother. The moment she approached, Damian's arrogant bluster completely deflated.
She took a seat on the sofa, her sheer presence immediately suffocating Damian's momentum. "I heard from Babur. He hit someone."
Now that Juno had taken over, Gwendolyn slipped into spectator mode, her headache magically vanishing. Now, Damian was the one with the headache.
It was clearly her brother's fault, yet Juno sat there looking completely unapologetic and utterly righteous.
Damian cleared his throat, trying to sound tough. "Yes. My son Manny is currently in the hospital."
Juno calmly took a sip of her water. "And what do you want?"
"Compensation." Damian pressed, "You aren't trying to avoid paying, are you?"
"Paying compensation is only fair. But I also heard that your son was running his mouth and acting aggressively before he got hit. Shouldn't he apologize to us before we pay a dime?"
"Once my son is healed, I'll personally bring him here to apologize."
"No. You apologize first, then you get the money."
Juno shut him down completely.
"You're just trying to make this difficult!"
"Yes, I am."
Gwendolyn suddenly realized exactly where Babur was picking up his new attitude.
She shot a glare toward Babur across the room.
Babur cut her off. "Mom, regardless of everything else, Juno is your biological daughter. Your first priority should be Juno."
Some things didn't need to be explicitly spelled out.
No matter how many years Rhiannon had spent with the Corrington family, she didn't share their blood. Were they supposed to neglect their actual daughter for the sake of an adopted one?
But the Corringtons were inherently kind-hearted people, not cruel ones.
So, Gwendolyn went to speak with Rhiannon personally.
Seeing Gwendolyn arrive, Rhiannon quickly opened the door and invited her to sit.
"Mom."
Gwendolyn glanced around the room. "Are you settling in okay here?"
"People should be grateful for what they have. I'm very happy, Mom. As long as I can be with all of you, it doesn't matter where I stay. Did you need something?"
Gwendolyn instantly forgot about the room and brought up the purpose of her visit. "It's about the birthdays. Yours and Juno's fall on the same day, but the parties are in two separate locations... so..."
The smile on Rhiannon's face remained, but the warmth completely vanished from her eyes. "You're saying you don't want to celebrate with me this year?"
Gwendolyn was temporarily at a loss for words. That was exactly what she meant.
Rhiannon stopped smiling. "I'm an adult now; I should be considerate of you. Juno is your biological daughter. It's only right that you go to her."
Gwendolyn immediately stood up in a panic. "Rhiannon, that's not what I meant."
"It's fine. I know my place in this family is awkward. You've already done so much for me, Mom."
