A few socialites who had their sights set on Chuck instantly hit the brakes.
An... illegitimate child.
What a shame to find someone so remarkable, only to learn he was a bastard.
In an instant, many people snapped their mouths shut.
Oblivious to the reaction of the crowd around her, Matilda continued to lecture Rhiannon. "Someone like that isn't worthy of you. He's unpresentable."
Morgan and the rest of his crew immediately darkened. They knew Juno. She was never one to swallow an insult.
Yet this exact person was currently sitting next to Chuck, completely motionless.
The calm before the storm.
Rhiannon didn't understand. "Even if he's an illegitimate child, he's from Blackwood City. His net worth has to be massive. Why do you look down on him so much, Grandma?"
Matilda knew she couldn't say the next part out loud, so she lowered her voice to warn Rhiannon. "In Blackwood City, the only power that can rival the Obsidian Court is the Yates family. Do you know why Chuck is in Kingsland?"
Rhiannon shook her head.
"Because he was driven out by the Yates family. A bastard exiled by his own elite family has no way to survive in Blackwood, which is why he ran here. Stay away from people like him. What kind of bright future could a bastard possibly have?"
Rhiannon's mind raced. If Chuck's illegitimate status was holding him back, wouldn't swooping in to help him in his time of need make him fall deeply in love with her?
Seeing that Juno seemed to have the same idea, she knew she had to steal his heart first.
If he eventually took over the Yates family with her support, wouldn't that make her the lady of a top-tier dynasty?
The thought alone made her ecstatic.
Outwardly, she nodded obediently, but inwardly, she plotted how to increase her own power.
A bystander watching the drama asked the person next to them, "Do you know why the Corringtons became the top family in Kingsland while the Jaggers failed?"
Because the head of the Corrington family was rational and kind, while the head of the Jagger family was incredibly short-sighted.
Thanks to Matilda's attitude, the birthday party ended abruptly not long after it began.
The industry titans all got in their cars and left.
Juno walked Mrs. Sherwood to her car.
Right before getting in, Mrs. Sherwood paused, her lips trembling slightly, and offered a solemn vow of gratitude. "Thank you."
She glanced back. "Wait here. Don't follow me."
"Understood."
Juno pulled out a handkerchief, covered her nose and mouth, and walked forward, scanning the absolute devastation.
The ground was pitch-black, a mess of charcoal and water.
As she walked, she noticed that whenever she moved, someone in the shadows moved too.
A single shift triggered a chain reaction.
She ducked into an intact warehouse, and the second she stepped inside, she was violently shoved against the wall, a heavy baton pressed hard against her throat.
Her expression didn't change. She didn't move.
The people in the shadows revealed themselves.
Several lean, highly trained enforcers spread out in a calculated formation.
Pinned against the wall, she couldn't see what was happening behind her, but the footsteps gave her a solid guess.
