"Why don't you try calling them?" his friend suggested.
Rylan dialed the numbers one by one.
Harrison didn't answer;
Gwendolyn didn't answer;
Rhiannon didn't answer;
Sebastian didn't answer;
Babur didn't answer.
Rylan stared at the black screen of his phone, utterly lost.
Did they have some sort of massive family emergency?
Wasn't his return supposed to be the main event?
...
In an abandoned warehouse, a sharp-dressed man casually sharpened a hunting knife. "You really got all the Corringtons?"
"Yeah. Honestly didn't expect it to be this easy. Figured high-society types would have a bit more brainpower."
"Don't get sloppy. Tonight is make or break. Veronica already got busted. If the heiress actually shows up and we confirm it's her, we contact Lucia Corbett. We don't even have to get our hands dirty."
Veronica was the woman who had caused a scene at Mrs. Dempsey's birthday banquet.
"Right. But I highly doubt it's her. We literally watched her die. The body was—"
"Better safe than sorry. Come on, let's go check on our VIP guests."
The family of four was tied up in the center of the warehouse. Their mouths were sealed with black duct tape, wrists and ankles bound tight. Hearing footsteps, they all looked up.
The building was an old derelict structure.
Ian Webb tipped his chin toward them, and one of his men walked over, casually ripping the tape off Babur's mouth.
Unable to move, Babur immediately spat out a string of curses. "You the bastard who grabbed my sister?! I'm warning you, let her go right now! Or I swear to God, when I get out of here, I'll destroy you!"
Ian let out an amused chuckle, dragging a metal chair over and sitting down, crossing his legs. "Well, aren't you worried I just won't let you leave?"
"I like 'em stubborn. Makes breaking them way more fun! Hahaha! Beat him!"
At the command, Babur was dragged to the side, and a group of men began mercilessly kicking and punching him.
Desperate, Sebastian threw his entire body weight forward, shielding his younger brother beneath him. He absorbed the relentless blows without a word, the metallic taste of blood already filling his mouth.
Babur struggled to push him off, but couldn't move him. "Get off me! Are you an idiot?!"
"Alright, I don't have all night to watch a soap opera."
Ian waved his hand, and the men stepped back.
He inspected the two brothers, satisfied with the damage, and ordered his guys to drag them back into the circle. Picking at his ear out of sheer boredom, he mused, "She hasn't shown up yet. Think your precious little princess is actually going to risk her neck for you?"
Silence.
Ian frowned, annoyed. "Speak up! You want another beating?"
One of his men awkwardly cleared his throat. "Boss, you taped their mouths shut."
"Oh, right. Rip 'em off. I need some conversation to kill the time."
