Everyone blinked.
The smile that had just bloomed on Melba's face vanished instantly. "These paintings are my husband's private collection. How could they be fake?"
"Every one of Cyan's paintings has a hidden watermark. You can see it with any standard UV light."
With that, Juno casually tossed a UV light pen toward her. Without thinking, Melba caught it mid-air.
"If you don't believe me, look for yourself. Not a single painting hanging in this room bears Cyan's mark."
Refusing to believe it, Melba stepped over to the nearest painting and ran the light over it. Just as Juno had said, she scanned it top to bottom, and there was absolutely no watermark.
How could this be?
One of Melba's friends spoke up in disbelief. "Are you just making this up to trick us? With the Talbot family's immense wealth, if they can't secure an authentic Cyan, who can?
"You claim all the paintings here are fake, but have you ever even seen a real one? If you have, why don't you bring it out and enlighten us?
"If you can't, then you should keep your mouth shut. It just makes you sound utterly ignorant."
The woman was firing on all cylinders.
She clearly had a massive grudge against Juno.
Dissenting whispers began rippling through the crowd.
"It's understandable for someone so young to talk big for attention, but claiming every single painting here is fake? That's going too far."
"Exactly. I heard Cyan's apprentice, Anya Archer, is actually in Jindale City right now. Why don't we just call her over to check?"
"Cyan is famously elusive, and his people are totally detached from society. Good luck getting her to show up."
"Just tell her someone here is calling her mentor's work fake. She'll definitely come down to clear things up."
"Are you stupid? If we bought fakes, that's our problem. Why would his apprentice care?"
Amidst the chatter, Mr. Yale hurried in and whispered a report to Melba. "There's a woman outside named Anya Archer demanding entry. Security stopped her because she doesn't have an invitation. She asked me to see if you'd let her in."
Speak of the devil.
"Let her in."
Melba said this while glaring directly at Juno.
She couldn't wait to see how Juno was going to dig herself out of this grave.
The guests exchanged wildly confused glances. Her mentor?
Where?
Here?
"And where exactly is your mentor...?"
Anya raised a hand, gesturing directly toward Juno with an open palm. "My mentor."
The crowd slowly turned. Standing exactly where she pointed was Juno.
???
Margie's eyes nearly popped out of her head.
When Juno declared the paintings were fakes, Margie knew this crowd was going to get violently humbled.
But she never, in her wildest dreams, imagined that Juno actually was Cyan.
It seemed her incredible niece was entirely made of jaw-dropping surprises.
