Juno Mercer and Morgan suddenly heard footsteps approaching the door.
Their eyes met in the air, and Morgan immediately slipped out the window, vanishing into the shadows.
The moment he disappeared, the door clicked open.
Juno looked up to see Balfour Lytton.
He was the picture of elegance. He seemed to have an affinity for white, always dressed in it no matter the occasion.
Spotless and impossibly clean, he looked almost ethereal.
He walked over, scooped Juno up in his arms, and carried her to the sofa nearby, setting her down gently.
Turning around, he twisted the cap off a bottle. "I heard you made a bet with Scarlett Vance," he mentioned casually.
Juno's hand had just brushed against a bottle of water, but he intercepted it. "Yeah."
Balfour poured out a cup of hot tea and handed it to her, making sure she held it with both hands.
"Drink less cold stuff. Your stomach can't handle it."
Juno paused right before taking a sip.
For a second, she couldn't tell who he was talking to.
Was he talking to Sylvie Sloane, or her?
She had a bad stomach, too.
Her original body had been severely mistreated in the countryside, never given enough to eat while being forced to do heavy farm work, leaving her with chronic health issues.
Balfour smiled. "Why are you looking at me like that? Drink it while it's hot."
Juno quietly took a small sip of the tea.
As she drank, Balfour carefully rolled up her pant leg, revealing a dark, bruised ankle.
He took off her shoe. Juno instinctively tried to pull her foot back, but his grip tightened.
Taking a dab of ointment on his fingers, he began to massage her ankle with firm, steady pressure. Before long, a soothing warmth spread through the joint.
It felt incredibly relieving.
Balfour's movements were expert, as if he had specifically trained for this.
Hearing her agree, the smile on his face deepened, the corners of his striking eyes lifting with a handsome allure.
"Are you not feeling well?" Juno asked.
Honestly, from the moment he walked in, she could tell from his pale complexion that something was off, but he had been suppressing it well.
Balfour looked surprised for a moment before giving a sheepish smile. "You noticed."
"What's wrong?" she pressed.
"Just an old habit. When I get busy, I forget to eat."
Juno stood up. "I'll go grab you some food."
Balfour grabbed her wrist, his warm palm reluctant to let go. "No need. Just sit with me."
He pulled her back onto the sofa.
The moment she sat down, he laid his head on her lap. He took her hand and placed it over his stomach, his voice low and soft like a cat's. "If you rub it for me, it won't hurt anymore."
Juno lowered her eyes, looking at his haggard face. She gently massaged his stomach, but her gaze was fixated on the phone resting on the sofa.
