A groggy Miles rubbed his sleepy eyes and looked at Chuck’s grim expression. "What’s wrong with you? Do your ribs hurt again? I told you not to leave the hospital so early! But no, you never listen!"
He reached out to check the bandages, but Chuck slapped his hand away. "Back off."
Miles: ...
As soon as class ended, Chuck showed up outside Juno’s classroom.
Her classmates were already gossiping about her sudden exit.
Their whispers were getting louder.
"I've never seen her like that, just bolting out of the room. I mean, she's a rebel, but she's never blatantly disrespected a teacher before."
"I wonder what happened."
Mandy had been calling Juno back-to-back, leaving a barrage of messages online when she didn't pick up, but there was zero response.
With her best friend gone, Mandy couldn't sit still.
Just as she was pacing like a cat on a hot tin roof, Chuck walked in.
Some people are born to be the center of attention, commanding the room the second they enter.
He walked straight toward her, and for a split second, Mandy felt her breath hitch.
So guys who were breathtakingly handsome actually did exist in real life.
When he stopped in front of her, his voice was smooth and cool, like a clear mountain stream. "What did she see on her phone before she ran out?"
Brought back to reality by the mention of Juno, Mandy snapped out of her trance and racked her brain. "I didn't really see. I think she was checking her social media feed."
Chuck pulled out his phone, downloaded the trending app, and tried to log in, but the servers had completely crashed. It wouldn't load.
Mandy checked hers and realized she was locked out too.
Without another word, Chuck turned on his heel, left the school, and headed straight to the nearest internet cafe.
His pale, elegant fingers flew across the keyboard, moving so fast they were practically a blur.
Moments later, he bypassed the server block.
Scanning the trending lists, he saw one name completely dominating the entire platform.
Maia.
Maia. Juno. Mercer.
Despite her pale, exhausted face, she managed a beautiful, gentle smile. "You're home, sweetie?"
"Yeah," she replied quietly.
"Could you go to your room for a bit?"
"Okay."
Juno’s bedroom was right around the corner, separated from the living room by a single wall.
She walked to her doorway and shut the door loudly enough for Maia to hear, but she didn't step inside.
She could hear everything perfectly from the hallway.
Maia gave a hand signal, cueing her team to resume.
She hadn't wanted her little sister to hear any of this.
The staff deliberately lowered their voices.
"Our tech guys managed to scrub the original posts, but the servers crashed, which means the reach was massive. The gossip blogs and your rivals are already drafting hit pieces to ruin your reputation. This is going to be incredibly difficult to spin."
A sex scandal of this magnitude was enough to completely obliterate a star's career.
