"Superficial wounds?"
The doctor looked surprised. "His arms, back, and legs are covered in blunt force trauma from a baton. Did you not know?"
Juno fell silent.
No wonder he always wore long sleeves at school.
With that, the doctor turned and walked away.
She slipped into the hospital room. There was no one else looking after him, so she had to stay.
"Who was that guy who helped you earlier? I don't want anyone knowing about my condition."
"My sister's assistant."
He gave a faint grunt. "You can leave now."
A mocking smile tugged at the corner of Juno’s lips as she shot a frosty look at the guy in the bed. "Tossing me aside the second you don't need me? And here I thought a certain rich boy said he’d never need my money."
Chuck desperately wanted to distance himself from her, but it was a cruel twist of fate that she kept stumbling into his darkest moments.
"You really should keep your distance," he warned quietly. "Otherwise, if you drop dead one day, don't wonder why. It'll be the same people who want me dead."
She considered that for a moment. "Fair enough. Rest up, then."
She left without a second thought. The moment the door clicked shut, the entire hospital room felt suffocatingly empty.
It was far too quiet.
Juno paid out of her own pocket to hire a private nurse for him.
To her surprise, the very next day, she spotted him back on campus.
Her perfectly shaped brows knitted together in a frown.
But after a moment, she decided whatever he did was none of her business and brushed it off.
After class, she found herself blocked in the restroom by a group of girls.
She eyed them coldly.
The girl leading the pack sneered with pure arrogance. "I heard you've been getting awfully cozy with Chuck lately. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't I pay you for a tarot reading the other day, and you told me he and I had zero future? Turns out you were just saving him for yourself, huh?"
Juno had zero interest in arguing with an idiot.
They were just running their mouths, completely unaware of how shockingly fast that karma would supposedly arrive.
A trending topic was quietly surging to the number one spot on social media.
[A-List Star Maia Mercer’s Explicit Photo Leak]
When Juno saw the headline, the color completely drained from her face. Clutching her phone, she bolted out of the classroom, running like her life depended on it.
The teacher, interrupted mid-lecture, chased after her to the hallway. "Hey! Where do you think you're going?! We're in the middle of class!"
The shout was so loud that every student on the floor heard it.
Mandy, who had been dozing off, jerked awake at the commotion.
Down the hall, Chuck had been staring blankly out the window.
Juno’s face flashed past the glass in a blur.
Time seemed to slow to a crawl, and her terrified expression burned itself perfectly into his vision.
The pen he had been twirling came to an abrupt halt.
