The door slammed against the wall so hard it left Rhiannon Corrington's ears ringing.
Braden Webb's arrogant laughter died in his throat. His earlier audacity vanished, replaced by a sudden, creeping terror.
Juno Mercer strode straight toward Rhoda Sloane. When two bodyguards raised their arms to stop her, she didn't hesitate. Radiating pure hostility, she delivered a brutal kick to the first man's groin, then turned to the other, her fists flying in a vicious, unforgiving flurry of blows.
The second bodyguard didn't stand a chance.
Seeing Juno, Rhoda broke down completely, sobbing uncontrollably like a wronged child.
Juno unbuttoned her ankle-length wool coat and wrapped it tightly around her friend. The warm, comforting scent lingering on the fabric seemed to instantly soothe Rhoda's trembling.
Behind Juno, Morgan handed his sleek cane to one of his men, stepped forward, and gently scooped Rhoda off the floor. As he carried her out, his men thoughtfully pulled the battered door shut behind them.
The three members of the Corrington family stood there, utterly dumbfounded by the seamless display.
"I'm here now. Why don't you talk to me instead?"
Juno just stood there, yet her overwhelming, arrogant aura seemed to crush the oxygen out of the room, leaving everyone breathless.
"Did you do this to my son?"
"I did."
"You broke his limbs!"
"I'm aware."
"Aren't you afraid of the Webb family coming after you?!"
"And what if I'm not?" she shot back.
Her attitude was brazen to the point of lawlessness.
It was an explicit challenge: I messed with you. Do I look like I care?
Darcey was left speechless.
With the older woman silenced, Juno completely took control of the room.
"I'm curious, what unforgivable crime did Rhoda commit to deserve this kind of treatment?"
She took a slow, deliberate step toward Darcey.
"That little tramp has no status, yet she turned my boy into a cripple!"
"Whatever you'd like," Gwendolyn replied mildly. "Juno hasn't been feeling well lately. Let's make sure we have a nice, hearty soup for her."
"Sounds perfect."
While the couple calmly debated their dinner menu, Darcey screamed in absolute disbelief, "How can you just let her do this?!"
No one paid her the slightest bit of attention.
Rhiannon finally couldn't watch anymore. "Mom, isn't Juno going a bit too far? Darcey is older than her, shouldn't she show some respect?"
For once, Gwendolyn didn't coddle her adopted daughter. "Rhiannon, that's not how the world works. When someone makes a mistake, they need to be corrected."
Rhiannon was struck speechless.
"Don't get too cocky! Sooner or later, I'll make you pay for this!" Darcey shrieked.
Juno had heard that threat a hundred times before. It was boring.
Slap!
She struck the woman across the face with the back of her hand. "You clearly don't understand how I operate. I hold grudges, and I always settle my debts. Forget about the future—your son isn't even leaving this room unscathed today."
