Just as the words faded, Miles strolled through the doorway. He flashed a bright, white grin, looking to be in an exceptionally good mood. "Good evening, Mr. Yates."
Behind him trailed a massive, intimidating crowd.
One of the men flanking Earle Yates widened his eyes in sheer disbelief. "That's impossible. I had men watching all the Yates family subordinates. There's no way you mobilized this many people without me catching wind of it!"
Chuck Yates' main base of power was in Kingsland. Moving a force this size would have made serious noise.
Deploying them all the way from Kingsland on such short notice was simply out of the question.
As he spoke, a petite figure emerged from behind Miles. Her icy expression immediately dispelled any notion that she was someone to be trifled with.
Lucia Corbett's face was a mask of cold fury. "That's because he borrowed his muscle from me. From the Obsidian Court."
Before the old man could even utter a word, Lucia unleashed her wrath. "Are you out of your mind? You're a fossil! You should be at home enjoying the holidays, but all you think about is stirring up trouble! It's New Year's Eve, for God's sake! Are you tired of living? What on earth is wrong with you?!"
Did this old relic really think Juno Mercer was an easy target?
He just kept pushing and pushing!Pretty rebellious for a guy his age.
He clearly felt he'd lived a little too long. A couple of bullets would settle him down fast.
He was at an age where a slip-and-fall could take half his life, yet here he was, running around causing chaos. And the Yates family just let the old fool do whatever he wanted.
The second Miles had come to her, she hadn't wasted a second. She'd brought the operatives from Division XIV straight here. She hadn't even gotten to eat her holiday dinner yet!
On the surface, Lucia looked calm, but internally, she was on a murderous rampage.
Juno dusted off her cuffs. "Let's wrap this up quickly. It's already ten o'clock, and I need to get back to celebrate."
Earle Yates let out a humorless, infuriated chuckle. "You're sitting across from me, and you're thinking about your schedule? Aren't you worried you might not walk out of here tonight? Lucia and the others might know how to fight, but in a chaotic crossfire, who's going to protect you?"
There would always be a blind spot.
