Paxton finished going over the files. From the start, they knew Max was married. Now his wife had come back, asking for a divorce, not asking for any of his money or property, not even fighting for custody of their daughter. She was even willing to return the gifts the Hawthorne family had given her before the wedding.

Plus, nobody ever knew about Mr. Hawthorne’s marriage in the first place. Even if they divorced, it wouldn’t make a splash anywhere. So, honestly, Mr. Hawthorne had nothing to lose from a divorce.

“I’ll talk to my team and get back to you tomorrow.”

Paxton gathered the lawsuit and all the paperwork, then left the office.

Max reached for a cigarette.

That night, Anne was on a video call with Felicia. Felicia told her she’d be picking her up the next day to come stay at her place, and that they’d go out and have some fun over the weekend.

Max sat beside Anne, but Anne didn’t even check with him first. She just agreed right away, her face lighting up.

Then she asked, “Evelynn, can Daddy come with us?”

Felicia knew Max was listening in. She was gentle but firm. “The place I’m taking you isn’t really for dads. How about you just spend the next couple of nights at my house?”

Anne bounced up, grinning. “Okay, yay!”

After she hung up, Anne hugged her stuffed bunny and started hopping around on the sofa, totally thrilled.

Max reached out to steady her. “Careful, you’ll fall.”

Anne giggled and dove into his arms, cuddling against his chest.

Max stroked her hair, his eyes soft and full of love.

The next morning, after working out and showering, Max came back to the bedroom. Anne was sitting on the bed, yawning, her hair sticking up everywhere, still in her cute bunny pajamas. She rubbed her eyes and looked up when she saw him.

Looking at his daughter, so pretty and excited, Max’s usual serious expression melted away. It was obvious he’d do anything to make her happy.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek with a loud smack.

Max kissed the top of her head and brought her downstairs for breakfast.

Around nine, Felicia’s car pulled up outside.

She’d called ahead, so Anne knew she was coming. She waited at the door, practically bouncing on her toes, with Max standing beside her.

Felicia saw them as she got out of the car. Max was dressed in light loungewear, his short hair neatly parted. He didn’t have his usual chilly, intimidating vibe. Standing next to Anne, he just looked like a gentle, loving dad.
