Anne really did have a good dad.

But even so, it couldn’t cover up the fact that he could be pretty awful underneath.

When Anne spotted Evelynn’s car, her whole face lit up and she started waving like crazy.

Felicia pulled up slowly, unbuckled her seatbelt, and stepped out of the car.

“Evelynn!”

Anne ran straight over.

Felicia crouched down and took Anne’s hand. “You look just like a little princess today, Anne.”

Anne beamed. “Daddy picked out my dress.”

Felicia smiled, then stood up and glanced over at Max. Whatever warmth she’d had disappeared in an instant, but for Anne’s sake, she kept her expression calm. “I’m taking Anne with me. She’ll be staying at my place for a couple of days. I’ll take good care of her.”

Max didn’t say a word. He just handed over Anne’s little suitcase and her backpack.

Felicia took them from him.

There were gifts too, all packed up and ready. They were the kind of presents you brought for grownups, so there was no way Anne had picked them out herself.

Felicia was about to say no, but Anne insisted on bringing them along.

“You’re supposed to bring presents when you go to someone’s house,” Anne said, matter-of-fact.

Felicia had no choice but to give in.

She opened the trunk and asked the maid to put the gift bags inside.

“Come on, Anne, let’s get in the car.”

Anne turned back to wave at her dad. “Bye, Daddy.”

“Don’t forget to call me,” Max reminded her.

“I won’t,” Anne promised.

Felicia helped Anne into the passenger seat, then walked around the front of the car and got in herself. She didn’t look back at Max, not even for a second.

The car turned around.

“They’re going to be so happy to meet you,” Felicia said. “They’re at home right now, waiting for you to get there.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

Since Felicia was driving so carefully, it ended up taking almost fifty minutes to get there.

“Alright, Anne, we’re here.”

Colton was out front, leaning on his cane, with Ava holding onto his arm, and Greg standing close by.

As soon as the car pulled up, Colton couldn’t help himself. “She’s finally here,” he said, his voice full of excitement.

Even though he didn’t have much love for the Hawthorne family or Max, he’d always cared about Felicia’s daughter.

She was his granddaughter.

Ava smiled and gave him a gentle nudge. “Don’t get too excited. You don’t want to scare her as soon as she gets out of the car.”
