“Is your hand okay?” Jeremy asked.
Luke shrugged. “It’s nothing. Just a scratch.”
“Good.”
Felicia looked over at Jeremy. “How’s everything on your end?”
“Don’t worry. I’ve got it handled. You and Luke can fly home tomorrow as scheduled,” Jeremy said, calm and confident.
Felicia nodded. “Alright.”
The next morning at eight, Felicia and Luke finished packing. Tommy helped them get their luggage to the car. Jeremy joined them, driving to the airport to see them off.
“Travel safe. Text me when you land,” Jeremy said.
Felicia nodded, looking at him seriously. “You take care too, Jeremy. No heroics, okay?”
Jeremy smiled, trying to reassure her. “I’ll be fine. Go home, get some rest.”
Luke added his own words of caution, giving Jeremy a look that said he meant it.
Just as Felicia was about to push her luggage cart toward the entrance, a man appeared in their path. Luke tensed, watching him closely. Jeremy glanced back, his expression turning sharp and cold.
Holden walked up, eyes locked on Felicia. “Heading home already? I came just to see you off, Evelynn. Hope we run into each other again.”
Felicia’s voice was icy. “The only news I want to hear about you next time is that you’re gone for good.”
Holden grinned. “Don’t be so heartless. I can’t leave this world before I’ve had you.”
Luke looked ready to punch him. Jeremy stepped in before things got out of hand. “Surprised you’ve got time to show up here, Holden.”
Holden’s smile faded a bit. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Trey hesitated for a moment. “Weren’t you trying to figure out how Max feels about Evelynn?”
Holden’s eyes narrowed, a cold little smile on his lips. “I’ve got my answer.”
Hours later, Felicia and Luke finally landed. It was late, the airport nearly empty. Felicia texted Jeremy to let him know they’d arrived. She and Luke checked into a hotel near the airport for the night.
The next day, they took a cab home. Colton and Ava were there waiting, relief all over their faces. Ava hugged Felicia tight and started crying, unable to hold it in.
“Mom, come on… I was just away for work. I told you I’d be back,” Felicia said, trying not to tear up herself.
Ava wiped her eyes, pulling herself together. “I know, I know. I’m just glad you’re home. Look at you. You’ve lost weight, and so has Luke. Both of you need to eat and rest.”
That night, Greg came home and the whole family sat down for a proper dinner. He noticed Luke’s injury right away and asked what happened.
Luke just smiled and said he’d been careless. Greg didn’t push, even though he clearly didn’t buy it. For now, he just let it go.
