“She’s still the heiress of the Curtis family,” Trey said. “Mrs. Curtis is in a rush to marry Andrea off to Max. It’s all about the Curtis family’s future.”

They’d both heard plenty about the mess between Darin and the Curtis family.

Holden gave a cold laugh. “Max isn’t going to start a war with Darin over Andrea. But it’s weird, right? Darin hates everyone else in the Curtis family, but he actually seems to care about his half-sister.”

That part just didn’t add up for him.

After a pause, Holden continued. “Trey, look into Darin when you get back. We lost so much because of Max. We have to get back at him somehow. No alliance lasts forever. Darin might be the weak link. Let’s see what we can dig up.”

Trey nodded. “Got it.”

Tomorrow was Saturday, which meant the school break started as soon as the morning parent-child event ended.

After lunch, Max and Felicia took Anne home to Oakridge Estate. Anne had been bouncing with excitement, but she fell asleep almost as soon as they got in the car.

Max carried her upstairs. Felicia stayed downstairs, waiting on the sofa.

About ten minutes later, Max came back down and sat across from her. With Anne gone, the mood in the room shifted. Whatever polite mask they’d worn before was gone. The tension settled back in, heavier than ever.

“What do you want to say?” Max said.

Felicia looked right at him, her voice calm. “I want to talk about the divorce.”

He didn’t react. “How do you want to talk about it?”

Max let out a short laugh. “So if we’re not divorced, you’ll still live apart from her?”

Felicia went silent. There was no way out. If Anne knew the truth, she’d never accept being separated from her mother.

“Then what do you suggest?” Felicia asked, trying to keep her voice steady. “Are we just supposed to keep pretending? How does that help Anne?”

Max looked at her for a long moment.

Finally, he spoke. “Three years.”

Felicia blinked. “What do you mean?”

He leaned forward, voice steady. “You tell Anne who you are. You give her your time, you’re there for her. After three years, if Anne agrees to let you go, then I’ll give you the divorce.”
