“What are you doing here?”

Max said. “I told you I’d take you skiing, didn’t I? Of course I showed up.”

She had made it so clear that she’d be with Anne these two days, but Max had always done whatever he wanted. Listening to other people just wasn’t his thing.

Still, Andrea had cried so hard earlier, and he hadn’t stayed with her. That was unusual.

“It’s late. Anne needs to go to bed now.”

Anne suddenly looked up. “Evelynn, can Daddy sleep with us tonight?”

Felicia stepped closer, her tone gentle but firm. “No, honey, he can’t.”

Anne saw the serious look on Felicia’s face and quickly quieted down. “Okay.”

“Alright, time to get in bed,” Felicia said.

Anne climbed under the covers and pulled the blanket up herself. She looked up at Felicia with those big, round eyes, like she was hoping for forgiveness for something she’d done wrong.

Felicia’s heart melted a little. She sat on the edge of the bed and tucked Anne in.

Max came over, ruffled Anne’s hair, and kissed her forehead. “See you in the morning, sweetheart.”

“Goodnight, Daddy.”

“Goodnight.”

Max straightened, gave Felicia a quick glance, then walked out of the bedroom.

The next morning, Luke was just about to knock on Felicia’s door when he noticed a familiar figure at the end of the hallway.

He turned and saw Max.

Felicia had told Heather last night that Max had come to the resort. Heather had vented to Greg, and of course Luke found out Max was here.

Max looked over at him.

“Max,” Luke called out. His voice sounded a little stiff.

Max just nodded, not saying anything.

He knocked on Felicia’s door.

Felicia and Anne were just finishing getting ready.

He didn’t bother to hide his distain.

Max just stayed calm, not bothered in the slightest.

Heather noticed him and gave a quick greeting. “Mr. Hawthorne.”

Max nodded. “Hello.”

Heather just smiled politely.

“Uncle Max, you’re here too,” Yara said. Her little voice was sweet and polite.

Max bent down a little to meet her eyes, smiling kindly. “Yes, I came to take Anne skiing.”

“Uncle Max is a really good dad.”

Max smiled at her.

Anne jumped in right away. “My daddy is the best daddy in the world.”

Yara’s eyes dimmed for a second. She looked up at her mom, her face a little sad.
