She figured he was just trying to make things feel homey for Anne. With a quiet nod, she reached for Anne’s little hand.

It was still way too early for the hotel’s breakfast buffet, but Max had already called ahead. When the three of them got down to the restaurant, a server brought their breakfast right over.

Anne sat beside Felicia, swinging her legs and looking every bit the picture of happiness. But just like yesterday morning, she started picking at her food.

“Anne, eat your eggs. You can’t waste food.”

Anne pouted and looked at Felicia. “Daddy can eat it.”

Felicia’s voice turned firm. “Anne, you can’t be picky. Be a good girl and finish your eggs.”

Anne’s bright eyes suddenly looked so sad. She glanced at her dad, hoping for backup.

Max met Felicia’s eyes. “Just give them to me.”

Felicia didn’t respond to him. She kept her focus on Anne. “If you’re picky, I won’t go up the mountain with you to see the sunrise today.”

Anne immediately shoveled in her eggs, finished her milk, and even made sure her toasts were all gone. “I finished everything. Was I good?”

Felicia wiped her mouth gently. “You are the best.”

Max got up and helped Anne put on her mask and hat, while Felicia slipped little gloves onto Anne’s hands. The three of them together looked exactly like a happy family. Once Anne was all bundled up, she suddenly wanted kisses. She gave Felicia a kiss, then turned and kissed her dad, grinning at both of them. Only her pretty, crescent-shaped eyes showed above all her winter gear, and her sweet little voice piped up, “Daddy, Mommy.”

Felicia’s heart gave a sharp, unexpected jolt.

“The sun is coming out!” Anne squealed, bouncing with excitement.

Max lifted his camera to capture the sunrise. Felicia glanced at him, a bit surprised. She never would have guessed this man actually appreciated the beauty of nature, or even had an artistic side. It just didn’t fit with the person she thought he was.

Max put his camera down and turned to her. “Something on your mind?”

Felicia looked away, her eyes on the distant sky. “No, nothing.”

“Want to take a picture together?” Max asked.

His whole attitude today was throwing Felicia off. Before she could answer, Anne jumped in.
