"Stabilize her condition first before we proceed with any deep therapy," Max finally ordered. He then turned to Darin, who had remained entirely silent. "Your opinion?"
"We will do just that for now," Darin agreed coldly.
By this time, Felicia had fallen into a deep sleep. A warm, ambient light illuminated the spacious bedroom. Anne snuggled close to her mother, and the two slept peacefully together on the large bed.
Darin slipped into the room to check on Felicia. He did not stay long. When he stepped back out into the hallway, he found Max standing by the door. "Are you sleeping here tonight?" Darin asked sharply.
"Her sleep is unstable at night," Max replied. "Someone has to keep watch."
Darin's expression darkened even further. "I am sleeping in the next room tonight."
"Suit yourself," Max said dismissively.
Darin retreated to the adjacent bedroom. His phone rang again, displaying Yvonne's number. She had called several times earlier in the day, but he had ignored every single one. This time, he answered.
He held the phone to his ear in pure silence. Yvonne's voice came through, completely stripped of her usual anger and demands. She sounded eerily calm and exhausted. "Darin, I was too impulsive the other day and said some wrong things. Whatever issues we have, we can work them out as mother and son. I heard Felicia is sick. How is she doing now?"
Yvonne had entirely lowered her pride. But Darin's tone remained freezing cold. "There is absolutely nothing left to resolve. It must be so difficult for you to pretend to care about Felicia's health."
Yvonne tightened her grip on her phone, desperately wanting to explain, but Darin cut her off with merciless words.
"You do not need to fake your concern for her anymore. From the moment you abandoned her, you ceased to be her mother. And from this moment forward, you can consider yourself without a son."
Yvonne's face drained of color. "Darin..."
He hung up immediately.
Listening to the dead tone echoing in her ear, Yvonne sank onto the sofa, utterly devastated.
"Mom." Andrea's voice broke the silence.
Yvonne looked up as Andrea suddenly threw herself into her arms, crying bitterly. "Mom, is Darin never going to like me again?"
Yvonne stroked Andrea's hair, entirely at a loss for words to comfort her.
Suddenly, she broke free from his grasp and grabbed his hand tightly instead. Max looked down at her slender, shivering fingers digging desperately into his skin, as if she were utterly terrified of being abandoned. He slowly lifted his gaze to her face. She was not fully awake, trapped entirely in her night terrors. He reached out to gently wipe the cold sweat and tears from her cheek.
Without waking her, he lay back down beside her, pulling her deeply into his embrace and holding her shivering body secure.
Suddenly, Felicia's eyes snapped open in absolute terror.
Before she could panic, a rich, deep voice washed over her from above. "It is alright. You are safe now."
This time, Felicia did not have a violent emotional breakdown like the previous nights. Instead, her entire body went incredibly rigid. Max scooped her up into his arms and carried her to the guest bedroom. He turned on all the lights, started a playlist of soothing music, and sat down with her on the sofa.
Felicia rested against his chest without moving an inch. After an agonizingly long time, her stiff muscles finally began to relax.
"You should go get some rest. I am fine," she whispered hoarsely.
Max looked down at her. "Are you having trouble sleeping?"
"Yes," she murmured. "I just want to be alone for a bit."

Is this coming to an end...
Oh nooo!! Don’t tell me Max will get washed ashore on a remote island then loses all his memory, then falls inlove with the local girl who saves him. Then when he meets Felicia again he won’t recognize her and breaks her heart again. Additional plot twist is that Felicia is pregnant with their 2nd child. Please pleaseee don’t give us this scenario.. LOL!!!...
If Max can be forgiven Darrin can be forgiven. And I do not like this marriage business but if it has to happen I hope after he gets stranded on some remote island alone while Felicia and his family fight over custody she wins and also gets half his estate. Then by time he comes back she's found having and remarried. Lol...
The writer is good. They're making me interested in Max. I won't say like yet....
It seems the only one who hasn't suffered is Max. Even his family fakes anger and disappointment all their own doing so they suffer a little. Everyone else has suffered. Luke and Jeremy unrequited. Felicia has suffered the most from family to unrequited to romance to long suffering Mother. Even baby Anne never had a mother til Felicia suffered then came back only to suffer some more. lol...
Oh no what did Colton do?... I have a bone to pick. When Olisha had to go the hospital why beg for Felicia? When she so loved Max? Seemed like she was in on the setup for Felicia to see a suicide for the 2nd time orchestrated by holden and his brother again. I might drop this series it's becoming endless with no real satisfaction for me. I don't need it to end because it's like a soap opera but if things don't end up making sense, tying up loose storylines it's gonna get old fast for me. Good luck author....
Anne, I think your baby brother is on the way. Thank goodness it doesn't say that Felicia is crying just like the last time but still, there's no willingness on her part. Max! You need to try harder. Make her fall in love with you again....
The writer did a big one with Jeremy's speech to Max. He said almost everything that needed to be said. I have wanted Felicia or someone who knows the past to just tell that whole stinking family what they did and how disgusting they are and what they're doing now how unfair it all is to Felicia. A pity it was only Max but he really needed to hear this (plus more)....
I love the chase of this novel, how you’ve build each of the characters. They almost seem like real. I feel like I know them irl. But however I would like to know what’s max’s pov and what’s going on in his head. I truly believe max’s just a grey character. And also please please please update more!!!...
I was really hoping that Max and Felicia would end up together, but why did Max do that to Felicia? 😭 Is that his way of making Felicia overcome the trauma Holden caused her? I don't think that's helping at all. I just hope Max's character has some redeeming qualities in the coming chapters....
