The piercing screeches of car horns and frantic screams echoed all around.
When Felicia woke up again, the sharp, pungent smell of disinfectant assaulted her nose.
Her eyelashes trembled as she slowly blinked her eyes open, greeted by the sight of a stark white ceiling. She lay still for a moment, her head spinning with a wave of intense, sickening dizziness. It took a long while for the memories to rush back—as they were crossing the intersection, a truck had slammed violently into them. Her head had crashed hard against the car door window before everything went black.
Just then, the ward door opened.
Max pushed the door open and walked in. Striding over to the bedside, he noticed Felicia was awake and softened his voice, asking, "How are you feeling?"
Felicia looked up at the man standing before her, her voice weak. "My head hurts."
"The doctor said you took a hard hit to the head," Max replied. "Concussions come with headaches and dizziness; it’s perfectly normal. You’ll need to stay in the hospital for a few days for observation."
"What happened with the accident?" Felicia asked. "How is the driver?"
"It’s still under investigation. I’ll handle it, so just focus on recovering," Max said. "The driver’s injuries are more severe. He’s currently in the ICU."
When the vehicle was struck, the driver had sustained injuries but hadn't lost consciousness. Right before the explosion, he managed to scramble out of the car at the very last second. However, with his leg injured, he hadn't been able to run far enough and was caught in the blast. As for the truck driver, he had been burned beyond recognition.
They were still in the process of identifying him.
Max looked at her and added, "It was Luke who saved you."
Hearing this, Felicia was startled. The sudden surge of emotion triggered a sharp spike of pain in her head, making her knit her brows in agony.
Max quickly reassured her, "He's fine. Don't worry."
"Is he here in the hospital?"
"Yes, he's already awake and resting. My aunt is with him right now."
Felicia breathed a sigh of relief.
"What about Anne?"
"I didn't tell her that you were hurt. There are people taking care of her at home. I’ve already informed the Ross family; she will come over tomorrow morning to take care of you."
Darin was waiting just outside the ward. Seeing Max come out, he immediately asked, "How is Felicia doing right now?"
"Nothing too serious," Max answered. "She just needs a good period of rest, and she'll be fine."
Darin cast a worried glance toward the ward door.
"Let's talk somewhere else," Max suggested.
They walked up to the hospital's rooftop terrace. Standing before the railing, the wind tonight felt exceptionally fierce.
"This car accident happened a little too conveniently," Darin said, his face tense. "If it weren't for Luke, I'm afraid Felicia would be in grave danger right now." He couldn't even bring himself to follow that train of thought. If anything had actually happened to Felicia, he truly didn't know how he would have coped.
Max stared straight ahead into the distance, the night wind carelessly blowing through his short hair. "Since it didn't happen, there's no need to overthink it."
Darin turned his head to stare at Max's calm profile. "You really are as cold and detached as always."
Max turned to meet his gaze. "I just don't care for useless hypotheticals."

The readers' comments on the novel: The Ugly Wife’s Stunning Comeback (Felicia and Max)
Is this coming to an end...
Oh nooo!! Don’t tell me Max will get washed ashore on a remote island then loses all his memory, then falls inlove with the local girl who saves him. Then when he meets Felicia again he won’t recognize her and breaks her heart again. Additional plot twist is that Felicia is pregnant with their 2nd child. Please pleaseee don’t give us this scenario.. LOL!!!...
If Max can be forgiven Darrin can be forgiven. And I do not like this marriage business but if it has to happen I hope after he gets stranded on some remote island alone while Felicia and his family fight over custody she wins and also gets half his estate. Then by time he comes back she's found having and remarried. Lol...
The writer is good. They're making me interested in Max. I won't say like yet....
It seems the only one who hasn't suffered is Max. Even his family fakes anger and disappointment all their own doing so they suffer a little. Everyone else has suffered. Luke and Jeremy unrequited. Felicia has suffered the most from family to unrequited to romance to long suffering Mother. Even baby Anne never had a mother til Felicia suffered then came back only to suffer some more. lol...
Oh no what did Colton do?... I have a bone to pick. When Olisha had to go the hospital why beg for Felicia? When she so loved Max? Seemed like she was in on the setup for Felicia to see a suicide for the 2nd time orchestrated by holden and his brother again. I might drop this series it's becoming endless with no real satisfaction for me. I don't need it to end because it's like a soap opera but if things don't end up making sense, tying up loose storylines it's gonna get old fast for me. Good luck author....
Anne, I think your baby brother is on the way. Thank goodness it doesn't say that Felicia is crying just like the last time but still, there's no willingness on her part. Max! You need to try harder. Make her fall in love with you again....
The writer did a big one with Jeremy's speech to Max. He said almost everything that needed to be said. I have wanted Felicia or someone who knows the past to just tell that whole stinking family what they did and how disgusting they are and what they're doing now how unfair it all is to Felicia. A pity it was only Max but he really needed to hear this (plus more)....
I love the chase of this novel, how you’ve build each of the characters. They almost seem like real. I feel like I know them irl. But however I would like to know what’s max’s pov and what’s going on in his head. I truly believe max’s just a grey character. And also please please please update more!!!...
I was really hoping that Max and Felicia would end up together, but why did Max do that to Felicia? 😭 Is that his way of making Felicia overcome the trauma Holden caused her? I don't think that's helping at all. I just hope Max's character has some redeeming qualities in the coming chapters....
