Chapter 359 The Legs That Were Gone

“Claire-Claire, how are you not even out of breath?” Eva asked, amazed.

Claire pointed at Zane and said, deadpan, “Because my Zane carried me up here.”

Only then did Eva notice that Claire was cradled in the arms of the tall, graceful Zane, who looked utterly unruffled.

“Ah. That explains it.”

Eva’s shoulders sagged, and she gave Claire a wounded look.

“Claire, right up until a second ago, I thought my Quentin was the best-looking male in the whole Beast World. Then I saw your beast mate, and now I know there’s always someone better out there.”

“Better than who?”

A calm, steady voice sounded behind the three of them.

Quentin walked over, his eyes fixed on Eva the entire time.

The moment Eva saw him, everything she’d just said flew clean out of her head. She bounced over, wrapped both arms around his, gave it a little shake, tilted her head, and said, “It’s nothing! Quentin, why didn’t you sleep a little longer?”

Quentin slid an arm around her waist, lifted her up, pressed the tip of his nose to hers, and murmured, “How could I sleep with you gone?”

Watching from the side, Claire had to resist rolling her eyes. She couldn’t resist shooting Zane a look, as if to say, Please tell me we aren’t that nauseatingly mushy.

Zane blinked back at her, as if to answer, We are.

Eva and Quentin were newlyweds, after all. They held each other, lost in the glow of it.

But from the treehouse just beyond the door came a sudden fit of coughing.

“Cough, cough, cough!”

The pointed coughing snapped Eva out of her daze. She scrambled out of Quentin’s arms and hurried over to knock on the door.

“Burrow, Claire’s here. Can we come in?”

“Come in.”

Burrow’s voice drifted out, hoarse and rough, like he hadn’t spoken in days.

Eva pushed the door open. The only light came from the doorway, casting a faint glow through the dim

room.

Claire looked up and saw that the window had been sealed tight with a piece of beast hide, not letting in so

much as a crack of light.

Once her eyes adjusted to the dark, she made out a figure on the bed against the wall, writhing slowly.

Is that Burrow?-

Claire’s heart lurched.

Eva walked to the window, yanked the beast hide aside, and grumbled, “Burrow, I told you ages ago, you have to open the window and let some air in.”

“Put the curtain back.”

The hoarse voice came again, this time with a cold, displeased edge.

Eva stamped her foot.

“Burrow!”

“Put it back!”

Quentin nodded at Eva and said, gently, “Do what he asks.”

Eva turned away in a huff, and Quentin hung the beast-hide curtain back over the window.

Luckily, enough light reached them from the doorway, and the group’s eyes soon adjusted to the gloom, enough to see the state Burrow was in.

He was struggling to push himself upright, but his legs were gone, leaving him with nothing to brace himself against. Every movement was awkward and laborious, and even after a long while, he couldn’t get himself settled.

Claire’s heart clenched. So both legs were already gone-from the thighs down, there was nothing left.

Last night, she’d assumed only the bones had been bitten through, that at least the legs were still attached. But now, even the severed legs were gone.

Claire hurried over to steady Burrow and tuck a pillow behind his back.

But Burrow knocked her arm away, hard.

Burrow snapped, “I don’t need your help.”

His voice was thick with bitterness.

Zane’s eyes went cold. He stepped forward, pulled Claire up to her feet, and said, “Claire, let’s go. He’s beyond saving.”

Eva’s tears spilled over in an instant. She rushed to the doorway to block Claire’s path and pleaded, “Claire, Burrow wasn’t always like this. It’s because of his legs-that’s the only reason he snapped at you. I’m sorry! Please don’t go!”

Zane held Claire’s hand and threw a contemptuous glance at Burrow, who was covering his face on the bed. His voice was ice.
