Even so, in just a handful of days, the wound had already clotted and hardened over.

Corvin’s medicine really was effective.

Claire looked it over, turning the options for treatment around in her head, then finally straightened up with a sigh.

That sigh sent Eva’s heart right back into her throat, and she blurted, “Claire, what is it? Can’t it be fixed”

Claire glanced at her, saw how wound up she was, and smiled to put her at ease.

“It’s not that it can’t be done. It’s just-”

Eva’s emotions swung wildly-one second she was riding high, the next her stomach was in knots. Her eyes were glued to Claire, hanging on her every word so she wouldn’t miss a single beat,

“It’s just that the wound’s already scabbed over. To grow the legs back, I’ll have to cut it open again. Burrows in for a rough time.”

“I can take it!”

Burrow’s voice cut in out of nowhere; his eyes lit up and locked on Claire.

Forget a little pain. He’d relive the whole horror of losing his legs and count himself lucky if it meant getting his old self back.

Claire smiled and nodded.

So, the little push she and Zane had given him hadn’t been wasted after all.

And that slap had done its part to snap him out of it.

Eva sprang up, threw her arms around Quentin, and burst into happy tears.

Zane, off to the side, sounded like he could hardly believe it. “Claire, did you just say you can grow him new legs?”

The other three surfaced from their giddiness and hung on Claire’s answer.

“Yes. New legs, the real thing.”

Pome had told her, “System’s hit Level 4, so now I can search clear across the universes. Turned one up- some high-tech world that cracked limb regeneration. Bury a certain medicine in the stump, and a new limb grows in on its own.”

Claire broke the miracle medicine down for the four of them in the plainest terms she could. Three of them immediately dissolved into excitement again. Only Zane sat there caught between wonder and a quiet, gnawing unease.

Zane said it with his silver eyes shining, looking as proud as if the triumph were his own.

Claire beamed right back at him.

What she left out was the rest of what Pome had said that the system in that advanced world wanted hundred tons of wood essence for the medicine.

After Pome bargained them down with all her usual smooth talk, the final tab came to one ton.

Claire hadn’t even had a spare second to ask Pome what wood essence was. All she wanted was to get her hands on that medicine.

Because Burrow’s legs couldn’t wait.

Give it too long, letting the wounds seal up and the flesh knit whole, and the window would slam shut for good.

“Pome, can we run a tab?” Claire asked shamelessly.

She knew her system had never been worth much, but right now, she was fresh out of options.

She didn’t even know what wood essence was, but it didn’t take a genius-a medicine that precious wasn’t going to come cheap.

That world may be light-years ahead on tech, but they trashed their own environment-can’t hold a candle to the Beast World. Their system was a total pushover. I barely had to negotiate before it folded!”

While Pome basked in her own glory, two pills with a soft green glow appeared in Claire’s storage space.

Once the room had settled, Claire spoke up.

“No sense dragging our feet. We’ll set up for the treatment right after lunch. The only thing is, you’ve got to keep it from the other beastfolk-just stand watch outside when the time comes. I can manage on my own.”

She couldn’t risk them watching the surgery, least of all that miraculous medicine, or it’d set tongues wagging.
