Chapter 360 A Way to Grow New Legs
Eva let go of Zane’s hand and threw herself into Claire’s arms, wailing
Heaven only knew how much it had torn her up to see that Burrow’s legs were gone the wax mat Claire right then, but Burrow flatly refused to let her, swearing he’d bite through in own unge o
all if word got out.
Burrow might have been timid, but he was fiercely proud. He would never let has broken self for sin Claire.
Even now. Burrow kept his head bowed, face buried in his hands, but his shaking shoulders gave you frightened and worked up he really was.
Quentin explained, “The truth is, when Burrow was first carried back, we had Dr. Black come take a look said the same thing-even if we found the legs, there’d be no reattaching them. All we could do was bandage the wounds and pack them with medicine so the stumps would close over as fast as possible. That’s why w never breathed a word of it to anyone.”
He still remembered how Matilda had fainted dead away from the shock back then, and the first thing the said when they brought her round was. This is your fate. Burrow! You gave your legs to protect the clan The eagle clan shelters our family. This is the least we owe them. There’s no one else to blame.”
After she said that, the whole family put on smiling faces for outsiders and never let a flicker of grief show. So apart from a handful who knew the truth, none of the other clan members had any idea
But from that day on. Eva’s other brothers came into their Awakening. Every day, they trained like their lives depended on it, forcing themselves to become braver and stronger.
Once the shock wore off. Claire couldn’t help feeling it was a little unfair to Burrow.
But honestly, going from a normal life to losing everything overnight was enough to break anyone. It was completely understandable that he snapped.
She walked back to Burrow’s bedside and reached to lift the beast-hide blanket, wanting to see exactly what shape his legs were in.
But Burrow swung his arm at her, and she quickly stepped back to avoid it.
Burrow roared, “I said get out!”
Slap!
A crisp slap landed square on Burrow’s cheek.
His embarrassment and fury froze on his face. He stared at Claire, stunned.
Down below the tree, Matilda and the other male beastfolk heard the sound from inside the treehouse too. Every one of them held their breath and looked up toward Burrow’s treehouse.
Claire shook out her hand. In the heat of the moment, she’d swung too hard, and her palm stung like fire
A small handprint was already blooming across Burrow’s cheek.

Chapter 360 A Way to Grow New Legs
He was still frozen in place.
Eva forgot all about crying. Her tears cut off in an instant, and she stared blankly at the two of then.
Claire’s voice cooled as she said, “So what if your legs are gone? If you really can’t accept it and spend the rest of your days drowning in self-pity, throwing your life away, then yes, you’ll spend the rest of your life seeing yourself as helpless. Is that what you want-everyone looking at you like you’re worthless?”
Of course, Burrow didn’t want that. But there was nothing he could do.
He shouted, “Then what am I supposed to do? My legs are gone! I can’t do anything anymore!”
Reduced to scraping by in the dark, he was basically living on borrowed time. It would’ve been better if he just been eaten alive by vicious beasts-at least he would’ve gone down swinging and died a hero.
But Claire shook her head.
“Who says? I don’t think that’s true at all.”
Burrow’s head snapped up, as if he’d caught a flash of light in the dark. He couldn’t believe it, and he couldn’t bear to hope. In a trembling voice he asked, “Can you really heal me?”
Eva was wild with joy too.
“Claire, if you can just make my brother whole again, our whole family will owe you everything!”
Their family already owed Claire a debt beyond measure. Without her. Eva and her mother would have been shipped off to Valorhenge long ago.
But now, if Claire truly had a solution, it wasn’t just Eva and Matilda’s lives on the line-all ten members of her family would owe Claire a debt they could never repay.
Claire cracked a smile and nodded.
“There’s a way. But I need to take a look at his legs first before I decide.”
Eva practically flung herself at Burrow’s bedside and fumbled the beast-hide blanket aside, saying urgently, “Claire, look. Take as long as you need, and look wherever you want.”
Burrow clamped down on his hide skirt for dear life, just barely keeping the most important part covered, all the while thanking his luck that the injury wasn’t there. Otherwise, how would he ever have found the nerve to let Claire examine it?
Claire leaned in beside Eva, but the light was too dim to see well.
She pointed at the window and said, “Zane, pull the hide down. I can’t see.”
