Doing that would just reveal she already knew the bead was valuable and knew what it did.

That would make Leona and whoever was behind her suspicious, and they might act unpredictably.

Or worse, they could threaten her family to force her to spill the bead’s secret, basically turning her into a walking container of spiritual essence.

It seemed that her instincts had been right all along.

“Bead? What bead?” Scarlett asked, her eyes darting slightly, but her tone calm.

Of course, she wasn’t about to directly ask Leona who she really was or what was backing her.

Doing that would only give herself away.

When things were still unclear, the smartest move was to stay quiet.

Leona noticed she’d sounded far too anxious just now.

She forced a gentle smile. “Scarlett, I mean the clear bead you used to wear around your neck.

“Hazel even said she once tried to get close to you and offered to trade her jewelry for it, but you refused. You treated it like a treasure. So why aren’t you wearing it now?”

When Scarlett lived at the Bailey Residence, Leona and Hazel had tried to coax the bead from her.

They even offered Hazel’s delicate ruby collarbone necklace in exchange.

Scarlett had ignored them at that time.

She said, “Wow, sharp eyes. I’m wearing a collared outfit, and you still noticed the bead wasn’t there.”

Then she added cautiously, “Have you been eyeing my bead?”
