Chapter 185 Dark Arts
Step by step, Selina and the others hauled water, gathered firewood, and swept out the classroom.
The room wasn’t locked. At night, they could push the desks together and sleep right there.
No one was counting on finding work in town anymore, let alone staying overnight in a local’s home.
Two hours later.
Once Ena had memorized all the boxing movements, Scarlett had her practice on her own.
She also gave Ena some water mixed with a trace of spiritual essence, boosting the girl’s constitution- otherwise, with Ena’s current body, she wouldn’t make it through these next few days.
Anything worth learning was hard. It took time. Step by step.
When the light started fading, Scarlett said to Selina, “Selina, you guys gather more firewood and haul back more water. I’ll go catch a few fish. Tonight we’ll make fish congee.”
The game they’d caught at noon–and the fish–had mostly been traded to the old shopkeeper for supplies. Whatever was left, they’d eaten for lunch.
Selina nodded. “Okay. Go.”
Scarlett didn’t go back into the mountains. She went to the river to catch fish.
There was a huge lake nearby. Catching a few from there would be enough.
Half an hour later, Scarlett returned carrying several fish.
Not just fish–she also came back with a bundle of willow branches.
Nelson and Adam hurried forward and took the willow branches from her.
Selina took the fish.
“Scarlett, why’d you bring back a whole bundle of willow branches?”
Scarlett said, “I’m going to weave some wicker fish traps tonight. Tomorrow we’ll set them in the lake. Easier. Saves time.”
She’d
grown up in a small town, so no one thought it was strange that she knew how to weave fish traps.
That night, Scarlett cooked a large pot of fish chowder.
She filleted the fish so thin they were almost translucent.
Once the chowder was done and seasoned, she slid in the paper–thin slices, turned off the heat, and let it
sit for one minute.
Just like that–fresh, fragrant fish chowder.

As for the fish heads, bones, and tails, she braised them.
Dinner was still only for the same five guests.
Even Simon got a bowl.
Hazel, Brianna, and Zayden got nothing.
After a cucumber and a tomato, their stomachs still burned with hunger.
They’d gone all day on basically nothing–who could stand that?
And as it got darker, the bugs got worse.
The three of them were covered in bites. Hazel smelled the fish chowder drifting over and got even more irritated.
She decided to go out for a walk.
A staff member would follow her, so wandering around town alone wasn’t a problem.
She didn’t expect that half an hour later, Hazel would come back beaming, carrying a grass carp that weighed around three to four pounds.
Brianna was hungry and miserable.
Ever since Zayden had fallen into the latrine that afternoon, he hadn’t said a word to her.
He’d been low and withdrawn.
And once you’d seen the guy you liked climb out of a latrine…
Brianna didn’t want to face this reality.
It was hard not to feel like something inside you cracked.
Brianna’s body itched, her stomach hurt, and her mood was wrecked.
Now, seeing Hazel haul in that huge fish, she finally looked a little happier.
“Hazel, where’d you get that fish?”
Hazel pointed back toward the lake and said happily, “I was walking around and ended up by the water. I don’t know what happened–it just jumped out of the lake and landed right by my feet. So, I picked it up and brought it back.”
She couldn’t help rubbing the emerald bracelet on her wrist.
Today, she’d secretly smeared a few drops of her blood on it.
And just like that–luck.

If she kept feeding the charm for seven days… would her fortune get even crazier?
The thought made her pulse quicken.
Brianna swallowed hard. “Then … we clean it and cook it?”
Hazel nodded. “Yeah.”
She was starving, too.

Brianna hesitated, then went over to Zayden. “Zayden … Hazel picked up a fish. You should eat a little later. We’re going to gather firewood now.”
Zayden finally snapped out of it.
“A fish she picked up?”
Was Hazel really that lucky?
Zayden frowned, but he didn’t think too deeply about it.
