Chapter 341 Venturing In
Scarlett carried them with her whenever she went out.
It never hurt to be prepared.
She had also brought the dagger.
Right now, it was tucked into the back of her waistband, cool against her skin.
Cody knew the sigils Scarlett handed out were rare treasures–things that could save lives.
He accepted the protection sigil and passed the others to the two officers behind him.
All three of them thanked Scarlett seriously.
Nathan also took the protection sigil and placed it in the pocket closest to his body, thanking Scarlett as well.
Scarlett didn’t say much more and followed Cody into the small car parked by the roadside.
Cody had somehow managed to find a very ordinary sedan.
Just big enough for five people.
On the drive, Cody kept discussing the case with his colleagues.
Scarlett continued reviewing surveillance footage.
From last night up until now, she had checked every route in the surrounding area where cameras were available.
There was no sign of Killian or the van anywhere.
At this point, it seemed likely the suspect had deliberately avoided roads with cameras and taken routes without surveillance.
The chance that Killian had stayed near yesterday’s disappearance point was very small.
Soon, they reached the location where Killian had vanished from the cameras.
The area was remote, surrounded by farmland.
Further ahead lay a small town.
The town didn’t look wealthy–just scattered houses, some small single–story homes, a few rural courtyards, and several two or three–story buildings
There were plenty of trees around, and the place felt desolate
The car stopped at the road leading into the town)
Chapter 341 Venturing In
It wouldn’t be a good idea to drive straight in.
Finisher
Cody turned back to Scarlett. “Ms. Sanchez, how about we split into two groups and check the town?”
Scarlett nodded.
In the end, Cody decided they would split up to search the town.
Scarlett, Nathan, and an experienced senior detective formed one group.
Cody teamed up with the younger officer.
The veteran detective was named Lewis Holt. He had been with the criminal investigation team for over ten years and had plenty of experience.
He was also calm and steady by nature.
When the captain assigned him to Scarlett and Nathan’s group, he agreed without hesitation.
Once the plan was set, the five of them prepared to split up and search the area.
Scarlett took out five more sigils and handed them out.
“This is a presence–concealment sigil. It doesn’t actually stop you from breathing or anything like that. Its effect is to reduce your sense of presence. It’s similar to the type of sigil the suspect used earlier.”
With this on them, even if they entered the town, the locals wouldn’t find their sudden appearance strange. It would just seem normal.
All they had to do was carry the sigil on them.
Scarlett and Nathan were both extremely striking in appearance, so they wore masks.
Cody and the other two officers decided to put on masks as well.
With flu season and pneumonia cases going around, many people were already wearing masks anyway
The two teams entered the town from different directions.
The edges of the town were sparsely populated, but in the distance, they could see small streets.
Walking there would take at least half an hour.
That was the center of the town.
Some areas there had surveillance cameras.
But Scarlett had already reviewed all the networked cameras nearby yesterday and hadn’t found any trace
of Killian.
So if Killian had driven the van, he definitely hadn’t gone into the town center.
OT
For now, Scarlett didn’t plan to go there either. She wanted to search the outskirts first

Finished
The nearby houses were scattered and far apart.
None of the three was particularly talkative.
Lewis focused entirely on the surroundings.
He carefully studied the terrain and examined the tire tracks on the ground.
He hoped to find some kind of clue.
Scarlett also kept an eye on the environment around them.
Nathan did the same.
They reached the first house.
It was a small single–story building with only two rooms. Weeds grew wildly around it, but there were signs that someone had been entering and leaving the house.
Lewis glanced inside, then looked at Scarlett and Nathan.
His meaning was obvious.
The place looked run–down. The windows were broken and covered with spiderwebs, and the outside was messy–clearly no one had lived there before.
Yet now there were signs someone had been staying there, and the door was half open.
Lewis wondered if Killian might’ve passed by yesterday afternoon and stopped there to rest.
But there were no tire tracks nearby that suggested a vehicle had parked there.
Lewis still decided to check inside.
Scarlett already knew someone was inside, but it wasn’t Killian.
Her senses were sharp enough to detect two different breathing patterns inside the house.
One was human, the other belonged to some kind of animal.
The human breathing didn’t sound like that of an adult male–it was lighter and softer. Probably a child who hadn’t reached adulthood yet.
Seeing Lewis quietly approach the door, Scarlett didn’t stop him.
The person inside wasn’t Killian. A half–grown kid and some kind of animal–there wasn’t any real danger for the moment.
Lewis quickly reached the half–open, broken door and glanced inside.
Then he quietly turned around and shook his head at Scarlett and Nathan.
