Chapter 96 Slaughtering the Pig

“Scarlett came into the town with the other six guests, right? This can’t be part of some scripted plan, can it?”
“No, how do people never learn? They always have to doubt Scarlett, think she’s orchestrating something.”
“No way… Scarlett even knows how to slaughter a pig?”
The old woman looked surprised too.
“Girl, how did you know the town butcher isn’t here?”
“Grandma, didn’t you hear what I said just now? I must’ve overheard you and your husband talking inside when I passed by.”
Scarlett really had just overheard it.
Ever since she reached the early stage of the Early Refinement Stage, her senses had become far sharper.
Even if the couple spoke quietly inside, she could hear them clearly.
The old woman hummed twice and gave Scarlett a skeptical glance.
“Girl, do you really know how to slaughter a pig? It’s not easy–needs strong arms, and it’s messy, tiring, and bloody. Don’t fool around. If you’re hungry, wait until noon. Once it’s done, you and your friend can have some pork stew.”
[Wow, the old woman is really kind.]
[Hurry up and get the other five guests here for the feast!]
[Haha, I’ve checked the live streams of the other five–they’re wandering around the town like headless chickens. Nelson even tried stopping a kid to ask if he wanted tutoring, and the kid rolled his eyes and ran off.]
[Hahaha, Nelson really is clueless enough to ask a kid on vacation if he wants extra classes.]
Scarlett spoke softly. “Ma’am, don’t worry. I’ll slaughter the pig quickly and properly. I promise you’ll be satisfied. Why don’t you let me go in and try?”
The old woman, Ethel Pritchett, still hesitated.
But looking at the delicate, soft, fair–skinned girl before her, speaking so gently, she couldn’t bring herself to refuse.
“Alright then. Come with me.”
Scarlett and Selina followed Ethel into the courtyard.
The courtyard was fairly large–about 1,000 square feet in the front, with a clean concrete floor.

On the east side was the kitchen, on the west side a storage room, and a shed neatly stacked with firewood.
There was also a main hall and two rooms, all facing south.
A water well stood in the courtyard, and along the wall grew a peach tree with some flowers and plants around it.
It was a beautiful, clean little courtyard.
The backyard held the bathroom and the pigpen.
Scarlett glanced at the pig–it wasn’t very big, maybe a little over a hundred pounds.
It had been crushed by the collapsed courtyard wall, lying completely still in the pen.
Scarlett stepped forward and touched it.
Completely dead, but not long dead.
She turned to Ethel. “Ma’am, this pig hasn’t been dead long, right? About half an hour?”
Ethel paused, then nodded. “Yes, yes, about half an hour ago. Victor and I were inside when we heard a loud crash from the backyard. When we went out, half the pen wall had collapsed, and the pig was lying on the ground, not moving.”
Scarlett said, “Then, Ma’am, please boil two pots of hot water first. The pig hasn’t been dead long, so we can still bleed it. I’ll carry it over in a moment. We’ll also need a long bench, a large basin, and a few smaller ones.”
As Ethel, still slightly doubtful, went to the kitchen to boil water, Selina exclaimed, “Scarlett, how do you even know the pig hasn’t been dead long?”
Scarlett smiled. “Just by touching it.”
Selina thought about how skilled Scarlett was at carving wood and how her grandfather always praised her medical skills.
Perhaps veterinary and human medicine weren’t so different after all.
To Scarlett, feeling the pig and knowing how long it had been dead was perfectly normal.
The viewers in the live stream were amazed.
She went to lift the pig.
Selina rushed over to help, but before she could reach, she saw Scarlett effortlessly lift the entire pig–over a hundred pounds–without dragging it.
Selina’s mouth fell open in a perfect “O.”
She thought about Scarlett’s abilities and shrugged–normal.
She just added a strong helper to the team.
