Lance looked at her, his eyes dark and intense, his voice dropping a little lower. “What are you trying to say?”
Felice straightened, glanced at Nathalie, and spoke. “What if I told you the person who saved you all those years ago wasn’t her?”
Nathalie gaped at her, completely thrown. “What are you even saying? If it wasn’t me, are you trying to say it was you?”
Felice ignored her, focusing on Lance. She searched for some sign of emotion on his face, something she could read, but found nothing. Lance’s expression was unreadable, his gaze calm and impossibly deep. She tried to wait him out, but the silence stretched on, making her restless. Finally, she blurted, “It was me. I’m the one who saved you back then.”
Now her nerves were on edge. She pressed her damp palms together, her heart pounding. If Lance’s relationship with Nathalie started because of that rescue… what would he do if he learned it was actually someone else? Would he realize he’d been loving the wrong person this whole time?
“You’re just making stuff up!” Nathalie’s voice rose, her anger spiking. She lunged at Felice, like she was ready to scratch her face. “Unbelievable!”
Back then, when the earthquake struck without warning, Nathalie said she’d run out and couldn’t find Lance. Panicked, she dove back inside, fear forgotten. She said she saw Lance pinned under a slab, that she was the one who struggled to move it and pulled him out. A heavy stone had fallen afterward, knocking them both out.
Now, Felice was claiming that she’d been the hero? It was ridiculous.
Daniel quickly stepped in and pulled Nathalie back, scolding her. “Can you calm down for once? Your mother’s still in the hospital bed!”
Nathalie rolled her eyes. “Did you even hear what she said? She wasn’t even at that event! How could she possibly have been there?”
She whipped around to face Lance, panic showing in the way she clung to his arm. “Don’t listen to her, Lance. Please.”
The room felt heavy, the silence pressing in on all of them. Daniel shook his head, his disappointment clear. “You’ve bullied Felice for years, and now you want to take credit for saving someone’s life too? I really am disappointed in you.”
Felice kept watching Lance, hoping for some reaction. As the seconds ticked by and he stayed silent, her confidence started to fade.
Why wasn’t he saying anything?
The tension in the hospital room was thick. Finally, Lance took Nathalie’s hand, his voice gentle. “Are you tired?”
