The call ended and Nathalie let out a sarcastic little smile. One after another, everyone was freezing her credit cards. Cutting off her money. Controlling her, trying to box her in, hoping she’d finally admit she was wrong.
But what in the world had she actually done wrong? People were already treating her like a doormat, and she was just supposed to smile and thank them for it?
Her fingers wrapped fiercely around her phone. Her knees hurt so badly she couldn’t take another step, so she plopped down on a bench by the roadside. She tipped her head back, looking up at the gloomy sky, her mood just as gray and heavy.
Her eyes stung, tears threatening to fall, but she refused to let it happen. They weren’t worth it.
Her parents had already been taken away from her. Lance didn’t love her anymore, either. So why should she waste another tear on any of them?
She sat there for what felt like forever until a car slid to a stop right in front of her. The door opened, and she recognized the man who stepped out instantly.
Her expression went cold as ice. She clenched her fists tighter and stared at him.
“Are we here to get divorced?” she asked flatly.
Lance's eyes traveled over her, taking in her pale face, colorless lips, and trembling legs. He didn’t say a word. Instead, he stepped forward, lifted her up, and carried her toward the car.
“Let me go!” Nathalie gasped, shocked for a second before scrambling and fighting to get free.
It didn’t matter. He shoved her into the car anyway and slid in after her. “Back to Lumina Grand,” he told the driver.
“Take me to the civil office!” Nathalie shot back, refusing to back down.
She dropped her head and bit his hand, sinking her teeth in as hard as she could. The taste of blood hit her mouth, hot and metallic, and she felt her control slip as tears threatened to fall.
She wiped her face quickly, shaking her head fiercely. She wasn’t going to let herself cry. Not for him.
Lance grunted at the pain but he just tightened his arms around her, voice rough as he spoke. “The only reason I’m good to Jasper is because he’s Jackson’s son, and Jackson is gone. Jasper’s just a kid. Was I supposed to ignore that and do nothing? Nathalie, couldn’t you at least try to see where I’m coming from?”
“I can’t,” she nearly shouted, her feelings boiling over. “You spent her entire pregnancy by her side. After Jasper was born, even the smallest thing—a fever, a headache—she calls, and you rush right over. Sometimes we were about to be together, and you just left me to go take care of her! How am I supposed to understand any of that, Lance?”
She grabbed the front of his shirt, eyes rimmed red, glaring at him. “You could stop wanting me if she called. And now you’re telling me you still haven’t changed? That you don’t love her?” Her voice broke as she spoke. “Lance, you never used to be like this.”
She remembered the way he once loved her, how intense and real it had been. That’s why she felt every tiny difference, and why she just couldn’t take it.
