The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 153

Lance’s eyebrows drew together as he took in her pale face. It took him a moment before he finally spoke. “I’m not letting you go from your job. And for the rest, I’ll make it up to you. I’m not taking Jasper away.”

Felice looked right at him. “Lance, I know you’re worried about Jasper, but I’m his mom. Of course I’m even more worried. What happened last night... it was just an accident. How could I ever leave my own child? You’ve really got it wrong.”

Lance let out a tired sigh. “I misjudged you. I’m sorry. But Felice, you can’t let something like this happen again. Jasper’s only three.”

Felice held Jasper closer. “Don’t worry. I’ll keep him safe.”

After a moment, her voice turned small and hopeful. “Lance, there’s really no way to get those sapphire earrings back? I’d trade anything with Nathalie for them—really, anything.”

Lance gave her a long look. “I could trade with you too.”

Felice hesitated, biting her lip, then she turned away. “Those earrings are the only thing I really care about.”

The room went quiet, heavy with things unsaid.

Lance’s eyes darkened. The silence hung between them, cold and thick.

After they left the hospital, Madonna turned to Nathalie. “Did you and Lance work things out?”

Nathalie shook her head. “No. There’s no way we’re getting back together.”

Madonna sighed, a little sad. “You two are like people meant to meet, but not meant to last. Lance is so stubborn once he decides something. He even warned me to stay out of it. There’s not much I can do…”

Nathalie met her mother’s gaze, voice calm but steady. “Mom, you need to help me figure something out. If I keep getting tangled up with Lance, it’ll ruin us both.”

All she wanted was a clean break. Divorce. Distance. No more memories she didn’t ask for.

Seeing her daughter’s determination, Madonna paused, thinking it over. “Maggie’s working as Lance’s secretary now. Nathalie, I have an idea, but it’s not exactly nice…”

“Tell me anyway,” Nathalie said.

She hadn’t been there long when the doorbell rang. She glanced over her shoulder, eyebrows knitting together.

How did he get here so fast?

She answered the door and stepped outside. “Did you need something else?”

Lance looked at her, his gaze resting on her cool, pretty face. His voice was rough. “Why didn’t you wait for me?”

Nathalie studied him, then out of nowhere reached up and touched his cheek.

Lance sucked in a breath, emotion flashing in his eyes. Without thinking, he stepped closer.

It had been ages since she’d touched him like that. Just that small gesture shook him, flooding him with hope he didn’t want to feel.
