The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 170

Nathalie shot him a quick smile. “What’s wrong? Surprised to see me?”

Lance’s face stayed perfectly calm. He glanced at her pale hand, then at her dress, before answering, “Not surprised. I figured you’d show up for me.”

Something icy prickled down Nathalie’s spine, but she kept her cool. “So, what are you all talking about?”

Lance looked over at the small group standing across from them.

The man at the front didn’t hesitate. “Nathalie, it’s been too long. You look more stunning every time I see you.”

Nathalie clinked glasses with him, smiling. “Thanks.”

Lance took it in stride and made the introductions. Nathalie jumped right into the conversation, chatting with everyone.

Felice hung back, not expecting Nathalie to suddenly appear. The second Nathalie walked in, it seemed like every eye in the room was on her. Felice tightened her grip on her wine glass.

After a while, Felice finally spoke up. “Lance, I really owe you for this.”

“Mm,” Lance replied with an easy nod.

Nathalie listened closely, equal parts curious and on guard. What exactly was Lance helping Felice with this time?

She curled her fingers, feeling that uncomfortable twist in her stomach.

Lance turned to Gavin. “Gavin, my secretary will get in touch. You and Felice can work out the details together.”

Gavin nodded eagerly. “Absolutely.”

With that, Lance took Nathalie aside, away from the group.

As soon as they were alone, Nathalie cut right to the chase. “What did you do for her this time?”

“Well, what if I am upset?” Nathalie looked him in the eye. “She shouldn’t be the face of The Blair Group. She’s just their adopted daughter. If she represents them, then what am I supposed to be?”

Her expression was serious, her stare unwavering. She wasn’t about to let Felice have even the smallest win. As far as Nathalie was concerned, she didn’t deserve it.

Lance’s eyebrows drew together, his gaze turning sharper and colder. “Nathalie, obsessing over this isn’t going to help you.”

“So that’s it, then? You’re really giving Felice the deal?” Nathalie’s eyes didn’t leave his.

Lance’s grip on her hand tightened. “That’s not what matters.”

“Let go,” Nathalie said, her voice frosty now that she understood where this was heading.

Instead of letting go, Lance held on even tighter. His words came out even colder. “Nathalie, there’s something I haven’t asked you. I fired Gavin, but you stepped in and saved his job. You barely know him… so why?”
