The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 2

Nathalie stood just outside the hospital room, watching as Felice offered Lance a glass of water. He didn’t even bother to reach for it. Instead, he leaned in and drank straight from her hand, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Nathalie’s grip tightened around the divorce papers. As soon as she stepped inside, Jasper, flushed and burning up with fever, gave a little shudder. Then, nestled in Lance’s arms, he burst into tears.

No one had expected her to show up.

Lance’s eyebrows drew together. He shot her a low, warning look. “Nathalie, what are you doing here? Jasper finally managed to fall asleep.”

“What does that have to do with me?” she shot back, her voice edged with bitterness. “And what does it have to do with you? Is he even your son? Why do you care so much?”

“Nathalie.” Lance’s voice got sharper. “He’s just a kid, and he’s sick. If you have something to say, save it for when I get home. Right now, let him rest.”

It didn’t matter if she was here with divorce papers, or just stopping by to check on her nephew. She had every right to be there. But the first thing Lance did was act like she was starting a fight.

Forcing herself back to the moment, Nathalie held out the divorce agreement. “Just sign. The sooner you do, the sooner this will all be over.”

Lance looked at her coldly, as if she was a spoiled child making a scene.

Felice walked over with a gentle, careful tone. “Nathalie, maybe this is all a misunderstanding. Lance is only here for Jasper. The little guy’s stable now, so why don’t you and Lance head home together?”

She leaned over Jasper, her voice soft and sweet. “Jasper, honey, come over here to Mommy. Lance needs to go home and get some rest.”

Lance’s jaw tightened. “Nathalie, what is wrong with you? Why are you picking on a little kid?”

“Just sign.” Nathalie nodded toward the divorce agreement, making it clear she was ready to keep going if he wouldn’t cooperate.

He cared about the mother and son so much? Then fine, she’d step out of the picture. Without her in the way, he could do whatever he wanted. He could take care of them in whatever way he liked. Even if he ended up in Felice’s bed, it was none of her business anymore.

Everything in the room froze. Lance looked like he was ready to explode. Jasper kept sniffling in his arms, and Felice hovered at the side, her face filled with helpless guilt.

Nathalie glanced at her elegant watch, not bothering to hide her impatience. “It’s late, I want to go home and get some sleep. Lance, be a man and just get this over with.”
