Freddy’s place was right behind Nathalie’s. From his balcony, he could always tell if someone was home next door.
Nathalie replied with a small smile. “Yeah, as soon as everything was official, I moved in.”
“Congrats,” Freddy said, his eyes warm. Then he hesitated for just a second. “Mind if I come over for a bit?”
“Sure, I’ll let you in now.” Nathalie’s lips curved as she pressed the button to open the door.
Freddy showed up quickly, holding a bag filled with fruit and desserts.
“It’s just a little something for my first visit. Hope you like it,” he said, handing the bag over.
Nathalie looked a bit embarrassed. “You really didn’t have to bring anything.”
Freddy just grinned. “Don’t worry. Next time, I’ll come empty handed.”
She laughed. “Deal.”
Freddy glanced around, taking in the mostly empty apartment. “You haven’t moved everything in yet?”
“No. I still need to finish packing. Once I’m done, I’ll call a moving company,” Nathalie answered as she poured him a glass of water.
Freddy gave her a thoughtful look. “You seem pretty eager to get settled in. Are you trying to get away from someone?”
Nathalie’s gaze dropped, her long lashes fluttering. “I just wanted a new place, that’s all.”
Freddy could sense she didn’t want to talk about it, so he let it go.
A few minutes later, the buzzer sounded again. Damaris had arrived.
She staggered in with arms full of bags, a little out of breath. “Nathalie, look what I brought! I got you a ton of new dishes. Aren’t they cute?” She was already pulling them out for Nathalie to see.
Nathalie nodded. “They’re really pretty. Freddy’s here too.”
Damaris stopped in the doorway and poked her head into the living room. When she spotted Freddy, her whole face brightened. “Hey, Freddy!”
Freddy nodded. “Why not? I live right next door.”
Nathalie grinned. “Definitely. It’s my first night here. We have to celebrate.”
“Cheers to that!”
Damaris popped open the beers, handing one to each of them before sitting down. “To Nathalie’s new home. Cheers!”
They clinked cans and the hotpot started to bubble, adding a lively sizzle to the warm, happy mood settling in the apartment.
Downstairs, outside the building, Bagot leaned over and whispered, “Lance, I double-checked. Nathalie’s definitely living here.”
He shot a nervous glance at the stone-faced man beside him. The cold expression on Lance’s face made Bagot shrink back a little, suddenly feeling like the air around them had dropped a few degrees.
Lance was seriously scary.
