“I’m out of money.” Nathalie’s voice was calm as she spun the huge diamond ring on her finger, its setting a swirl of delicate rose petals.
She’d loved it the moment she first saw it.
Later, he’d used that very ring to propose.
She’d been so touched by his effort that she cried her heart out. The ring became proof of their love.
But now, the love was gone. The marriage felt ugly. Life kept sliding downhill.
After thinking it over, she realized that maybe the only way to move on was to completely let go of the past.
So anything to do with him, with the life they'd shared, had to go.
Damaris fell quiet for a moment, like she was picking her words carefully.
Finally, she practically hissed, “That jerk. Did he really cut you off? He never used to be like this.”
Nathalie gave a small, self-mocking smile. “Yeah. How did we end up here?”
Damaris’s voice softened with concern. “Babe, I can send you some money. I know how much you love that ring. Just keep it.”
“I don’t want it anymore,” Nathalie said softly. “I can’t keep anything tied to him.”
After a long silence, Damaris finally gave in. “Alright.”
Once the ring was listed for sale, plenty of people asked about it. Still, the ring that cost three hundred million four years ago couldn’t even fetch half that price now.
But Nathalie wanted to sell it for as much as she could—she needed the breathing room.
Damaris tried to encourage her. “Why not get back to work? You haven’t taken any jobs since getting married. This business needs pro-level voice actors now more than ever.”
Something sparked in Nathalie’s chest.
“It’s been so long. Can I really do it?”
Damaris laughed. “Babe, don’t even ask that. Remember the records you broke a few years ago? The radio drama you narrated hit over a hundred million streams, and every ad you voiced sold out. Your fans have been waiting for you to come back.”
Nathalie felt lighter, almost happy, thanks to Damaris’s energy. She couldn’t help but smile a little.
“Nathalie.”
A low, rough voice broke the moment.
Nathalie turned around. Lance stood in the doorway, one hand braced against the frame. He looked pale, his handsome features drawn and tired.
“Shouldn’t I change my bandages?” he said, voice raspy. “My back really hurts.”
Nathalie watched him quietly, then answered, “I’ll call the doctor for you.”
Lance pressed his lips together, his stare growing even darker and harder to read.
Nathalie called the family doctor, but he was out of town on another visit—the doctor couldn’t make it.
“Changing the bandages is simple,” the doctor assured her on the phone. “Just do what I showed you before. Sorry, I have another patient right now. I have to go.”
