The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 250

Nathalie felt a chill run through her.

Camilla always seemed so distant and cold with Adelaide, but somehow, for Felice’s sake, she kept up this whole act. Why did Felice matter so much to her?

Trying to keep herself calm, Nathalie took a deep breath before speaking. “I don’t agree. I was the one who found those earrings for Grandma. There’s no way I’m letting you have them.”

Camilla shot her a look. “Don’t you think you’re being a little controlling?”

Nathalie turned to Adelaide. “Grandma, please don’t give her the earrings. She doesn’t even want them for herself. She just wants to give them to Felice!”

“Nathalie!” Camilla snapped, trying to cut her off, but Nathalie wouldn’t back down.

Camilla’s eyes darted away, clearly shaken. Adelaide watched them both quietly, a faint sadness in her eyes. Then she spoke softly to Nathalie. “Let’s go.”

Relief flooded Nathalie. Thank goodness her grandmother wasn’t letting Camilla talk her into it.

She linked her arm with Adelaide’s and started walking toward the door.

Camilla’s jaw tightened. She wasn’t ready to let it go and hurried after them. “Mom, those earrings never belonged to you in the…”

“Enough!” Nathalie spun around and glared at her, her eyes full of warning.

How could Camilla not get it? Grandma was getting older. Shouldn’t she know what’s appropriate to say, and what isn’t? Wasn’t anything sacred anymore? For Felice and her family, Camilla would apparently tear everything apart.

Adelaide closed her eyes, lips pressed tightly together.

Camilla stepped closer. “Nathalie, I’m talking to my mom. Can you stop interrupting? Or did no one ever teach you manners?”

Nathalie let out a short, bitter laugh. “You raised me. So if I have no manners, isn’t that your fault?”

“You…” Camilla’s face went red with anger.

Camilla ignored her, eyes locked on Adelaide. “Those earrings weren’t even a love token from Dad to you. He gave them to Winnie.”

“Stop it!” Nathalie shouted, her voice shaky and her eyes brimming with tears. “Stop lying! Those earrings belong to Grandma!”

Adelaide seemed to sway, her face so pale. She looked at Camilla, and for a moment, the sadness in her eyes was almost too much to bear.

But Camilla spoke again. “Mom, those never belonged to you. You need to give them back to Winnie.”

“Grandma, come on. She’s lost it. We shouldn’t listen to any more of this.” Nathalie felt her heart race with worry for her grandmother.

Adelaide, though, just stared at Camilla. “Winnie? Who is that?”

“Grandma, don’t ask.” Nathalie’s voice trembled with worry.

Camilla let out a shaky breath. Finally saying it aloud felt like something heavy had finally fallen away.
