Nathalie poured herself a glass of water and came back just as Madonna spoke. Her pretty eyebrows pulled together right away.
“Mom, what are you trying to say?” she asked.
Madonna looked at her, then said, “Nathalie, why don’t you go wash some fruit for us?”
So she was trying to get her out of the room. It had to be about the divorce.
But Nathalie stayed put. She kept her voice steady. “If you came here to talk about me and Lance, you can save it. I already told Grandma, and she supports me getting a divorce.”
Madonna looked shocked and turned to Adelaide. Weren’t elders supposed to be against divorce? Nathalie and Lance had been together for so many years. Wasn’t it a little too easy to just end it like this?
But Adelaide only smiled kindly. She nodded and said, “I’m Nathalie’s grandmother. I’ll support any decision she makes.”
Madonna was at a loss for words. She thought of something her son had said and let out a deep sigh.
“Adelaide, to be honest, I really did want to talk about this. I just think it’s such a pity. Those two put in so much effort to be together, and now if they get divorced, doesn’t that mean all that hard work was for nothing?”
Adelaide shook her head. “Back then, they fought for each other because they were in love. Now they’re breaking up because they’re not. It’s not a waste, not at all. Life always moves forward. There’s no going back.”
Madonna fell silent. There wasn’t much left to say.
Nathalie felt her whole body finally relax. Hearing her grandma take her side meant the world to her.
Trying to lighten the mood, Nathalie said, “Mom, why not stay for dinner tonight?”
Dinner from the hotel arrived not long after. Every dish was something Adelaide loved. Adelaide glanced at the spread and, for just a second, there was a flash of sadness on her face. It disappeared so quickly that Nathalie didn’t even notice.
Nathalie picked up some food and placed it on Adelaide’s plate. “I should finish my work in another couple of weeks, and then I’m coming to you. I want to stay with you for a while.”
Adelaide brightened instantly. “That sounds wonderful.”
Just then, Adelaide’s phone rang. She answered, spoke briefly, then hung up and turned to Nathalie. “Sweetheart, I’ve asked my lawyer to sort out all my assets. I’m putting everything in your name, just keeping a bit for my retirement. The lawyer will bring you the paperwork soon, so make sure to answer your phone when he calls.”
Nathalie was stunned. “Grandma, why are you doing this all of a sudden? I don’t want it. Please keep it for yourself.”
But Adelaide just looked at her gently and said, “You’re getting a divorce, and things with your parents aren’t great. If you don’t have a safety net, what will you do then?”
