Nathalie just stood there, totally floored. He moved like he had a wall up, icy and distant, his face pale and unreadable. He hadn’t even glanced her way, not even for a second.
He was late, and what, he couldn’t even bother to explain? Unbelievable. Nathalie almost laughed out of sheer exasperation.
She exhaled, feeling her irritation bubble up, then followed him outside the Register Office. Watching his back as he left, she called out,
‘Tomorrow morning at nine. If you’re late again, I’ll know you’re dragging this out on purpose!”

Jgh. Nathalie scoffed under her breath. She spun around and got into her own car. They both pulled away, heading in opposite directions.
By the time Nathalie got back to the hospital, her mood was impossible

‘It didn’t work out,” Nathalie sighed, sounding defeated.
Adelaide frowned. “What do you mean it didn’t work out?”
So Nathalie explained how the afternoon had played out. Adelaide listened, nodding slowly, then said, “From how he acted, it seems like he’s really set on getting the divorce. He probably just got held up today. Try again tomorrow and it’ll go through.”
“Let’s hope,” Nathalie muttered.

That night, Damaris blew up her phone, asking if she was free around eight the next morning. Nathalie thought it over. The Register Office opened at nine and she was supposed to meet Lance then, which left her enough time for Damaris’s blind date before that. So she agreed.
