Nathalie couldn’t help but sigh. “Seriously, it’s nothing. Why are you apologizing?”

Damaris hesitated, her words tumbling out. “It’s just that… I spent all night thinking about how I’d yell at Lance, you know? I had this epic rant planned and everything. Now I won’t even get to use it. I’m honestly disappointed in myself.”

Nathalie was silent for a moment, then just hung up the phone.

Freddy watched her, his lips quirked in amusement as he noticed her twitching expression. “Something funny just happened?”

“Nope,” Nathalie said, shaking her head. But in that split second she spaced out, a girl suddenly dashed out into the street and ran straight into her car.

Nathalie hit the brakes hard, but it was too late. The girl bounced off the hood and tumbled onto the street, rolling a couple of times before coming to a halt.

The shock took Nathalie’s breath away.

Freddy’s smile faded as he got serious. “Don’t panic. Your car’s got a dashcam. No one’s pinning this on you.”

He was out of the car in a heartbeat and hurried over to the girl.

She looked really young, maybe eighteen or nineteen, with fresh scrapes on her arms and legs. Her hair was a mess and she looked desperate to get up and leave.

Nathalie climbed out too and watched, frowning with worry, “Hey, are you alright?”

The girl shook her head quickly. “I’m fine, really. I didn’t mean to run into you. I’m not looking for money. I have somewhere to be. Please let me go.”

She forced herself upright and tried to limp away, but after only a couple shaky steps, her legs gave out and she collapsed.

Nathalie rushed over. The girl had completely passed out.

That’s when Nathalie noticed how thin and pale she looked, almost ghostly, so fragile it

made her heart ache.

Wasting no time, Nathalie pulled out her phone and called for an ambulance.

Later, they found out the girl had a fractured leg, but otherwise she was okay. Nathalie finally let herself relax a little.

With all that chaos, it was already way past ten.

Freddy was just about to comfort her when his phone rang. He picked up, listened for a moment, then said, “Alright, I’ll be right there.”

He hung up and gave her an apologetic look. “There’s a big meeting at HQ I need to leave

now.”

Nathalie nodded. “Thanks for staying with me this whole time?

Freddy gave a gentle smile. “If you really want to thank me, how about a dinner together sometime?”

“Sure,” Nathalie agreed easily.

As she watched Freddy walk away, she couldn’t help frowning a little. She’d onginally hoped Freddy could stay while she ran to the Register Office, but now that plan was out the window

She called Nicol over. “Can you wait here for a bit? just go handle the divorce stuff and then come right back.”
