“Lance, Lance, are you in here?”
The moment things got tense, the storage closet door flew open. Bagot’s booming voice echoed in, filling the cramped space. He glanced at them, saw the two of them caught in an awkward embrace, and quickly shut the door again like he’d seen nothing.
‘Lance isn’t in here. Maybe he stepped out. I’ll try calling him,” Bagot called out, his voice trailing off as his footsteps disappeared down the
hall.
Nathalie pushed Lance away, then yanked the closet door open. Out in he hallway, guests were beginning to leave their private rooms, their aces a mess of worry and confusion. Some looked scared, others just
stunned.
Nathalie stepped into the chaos and noticed a girl lying on the floor. The club’s medical staff were already there, wrapping her injured leg. The sight made Nathalie’s heart skip.
‘Ms. Blair!” Nicol spotted her right away. He jogged over with obvious
elief.
Nathalie didn’t waste time. “Didn’t you say this place was supposed to be
safe?”
Nicol winced and scratched his head. “I mean, we can’t check everyone that comes in. And honestly, you know there’s someone after you, but instead of staying home, you run to the busiest places. Are you trying to make things harder on yourself?” Lance’s voice came from behind her perfectly calm but dripping with sarcasm
Nathalie’s fist curled tight She just breathed out slowly and decided she wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of a reaction
Nicol shot Lance a complicated look The truth was, Nicol had been
watching Nathalie all night. When those men tried to drag her into the
VIP room, he was ready to step in. Then Lance showed up out of nowhere and pulled Nathalie away. How was Nicol supposed to compete with that? Was he supposed to stop Lance? Working for Nathalie was becoming impossible. Maybe he should just quit and let her find someone else. But would a new bodyguard really be any less tied up with Lance? The guy seemed to know everyone, even the likes of Neely. Nicol thought about it and decided he’d better stick it out.
‘Ms. Blair, we can’t leave yet. The police are almost here. We need to wait or them to clear the situation and make sure none of us are suspects
before we go,” he explained.
Nathalie nodded. “Got it.”
She glanced around. “Have you seen Damaris?”
Lance’s voice interrupted again. “Is he your bodyguard or someone else’s? He didn’t even protect you and now you’re worried about him?”
Nathalie just exhaled silently and kept ignoring him.
She pulled out her phone and called Damaris. Three rings later, he picked up, sounding out of breath and worried. “Nathalie, thank God, you finally answered. Are you okay?”
I’m fine. What about you?” she asked.
‘I’m outside the club. Before I could get back in, they shut everything down. It was chaos in there. I even heard someone scream. Please tell ne you’re not hurt,” Damaris pleaded.
‘I really am fine. Don’t worry. I found a good place to hide,” Nathalie replied, her voice soft but steady.
