When Mamie and Leah returned, Nathalie gave them the exact same speech.

“I can.” Nathalie studied her for a moment.

Leah still looked hesitant. “Is there something we failed at? You can just tell us straight.”

Nathalie held her ground. “My grandmother and I just prefer our privacy.”

“But…” Leah started to argue.

Nathalie stared her down. “You really want to stay. Why is that?”

Leah’s posture instantly stiffened, but she quickly recovered. “It’s just so sudden. Honestly, I think you and your grandmother are wonderful people, and I really enjoyed working here. To be completely blunt, finding easygoing employers is a blessing in this industry.”

Her eyes were completely clear, her tone ringing with sincerity.

But Nathalie wasn’t willing to risk keeping a potential threat in her home. “Don’t worry, I won’t say anything negative to the agency. The official

Seeing her mind was made up, Leah nodded in defeat and went to pack her bags.

By the next morning, the apartment was empty of the old staff.

That afternoon, the new replacements personally vetted by Garth arrived for an interview.

Garth even called Nathalie to reassure her. “Ms. Blair, I ran incredibly strict background checks on these women. They are absolutely clean. You and Leda can relax.”

Nathalie smiled. “Thank you so much.”

“Don’t mention it, Ms. Blair. It’s the least I could do.”

“When you have some free time, come over for dinner,” Nathalie offered warmingly. “Grandma was just saying how much she misses you.”

“I’d love that,” Garth replied.

The two new hires were Opal, who handled cooking and cleaning, and Karan, who was brought on strictly to assist Grandma.

Nathalie reviewed their files. They were refreshingly mundane. Neither woman had children, and Karan was happily divorced.

The knot of anxiety in Nathalie’s chest finally loosened a fraction.

Frowning in confusion, she opened it. It was a dossier on her former maids‘ children.

Nelly’s son’s boss was a distant cousin of Fabian from the Green Family, and the two cousins were notoriously close.
