The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 40

Nathalie jumped up. “Elaine, don’t stress. Let me go talk to him.”

Elaine let out a shaky breath. “Alright, just ask him what’s wrong. If we messed up, he should say so directly. We’ll apologize. Really, we will.”

Once she hung up, Nathalie marched straight to the hospital, anger simmering in her chest.

But when she arrived at Lance’s hospital room, it was empty.

A nurse stepped inside just then. Nathalie’s voice was icy. “Where’s Lance?”

The nurse flinched, intimidated by her tone. “I-I’m not sure. I haven’t seen him.”

Nathalie forced herself to breathe, pushing down her frustration. She spun on her heel and walked out.

A few rooms down, she paused. Through the slightly open door, she spotted Lance inside.

Felice and Jasper were there too, all gathered around Leda’s bed. Leda actually looked happy. The whole scene was soft and peaceful, everyone surrounded by love and laughter, like something out of a family photo.

Nathalie’s nails bit into her palms. The sting made her steady, made it all too clear just how heartless and shameless Lance could be.

She stalked to the door and pushed it open. Her words were sharp and cold. “Lance, I need to talk to you. Get out here.”

Leda’s smile dropped in an instant. “How can you act like this? I’ve been in the hospital for days. Not once have you come to see me. Lance was unconscious, and you didn’t look after him, either. What’s going on in your mind?”

Nathalie folded her arms, looking bored. “I don’t know, maybe I’m planning a trip to the moon. Dream big, right?”

Leda’s face went dark with fury. “You…”

Lance moved quickly, setting a firm hand on Nathalie’s shoulder. “Don’t talk to Grandma that way.”

Later, back in Lance’s hospital room, Nathalie finally turned to face him. Her eyes were clear, shining with anger. “Why are you going after Damaris?”

Lance frowned, his patience thinning. “I’m not.”

“Oh, stop lying to me.” Nathalie’s voice trembled. Her eyes were going red. “Elaine told me everything. You had someone go after her family, and now their business is shut down. If you have something against me, then come at me. Why drag my friend into it? What kind of person are you?”

She was shaking, every word full of pain and accusation. She saw him now, the kind of man who would lash out at anyone nearby, just to make himself feel better.

Something shuttered in Lance’s handsome face. He looked at her, as if seeing nothing but sharp edges and cold stares.

Suddenly, he stepped forward, grabbed her by the shoulders, and pushed her gently but firmly onto the bed. He leaned over, caging her in. “Fine. If it’s me you want, it’s me you’ll get.”

And then he kissed her, hard enough to steal her breath.
