Damaris just stood there, frozen. All the color drained from her face and she forgot to even try to fight back. Her lips parted like she was about to curse someone out, but she swallowed it down.
Nathalie stared at the man in front of her like she couldn't believe what she was seeing. Her eyes were getting redder by the second, her chest rising and falling with every ragged breath. “I’m the one who hit her. I bullied her. If you want to take it out on someone, take it out on me. Why drag in someone who had nothing to do with this?”
Lance’s face turned even colder, and the whole atmosphere seemed to chill. “So you do know you were bullying her. You’ve been making a scene long enough. Isn’t it time to stop?”
Nathalie’s hands were balled into fists at her sides. She bit down on her lip so hard she tasted blood.
Lance’s gaze sharpened and he tried to keep his temper in check. “Stop it, Nathalie. Let’s just make up, okay?”
She kept biting her lip, her voice raw and shaky. “What if I don’t want to?”
Lance shot a look at the bodyguards and made his intentions clear.
He wasn’t going to let Damaris off the hook.
Tears slid down Nathalie’s cheeks. “How can you be so cruel to me?”
Her voice shook so badly that when she got to the last word, it just broke, and she couldn’t say anything else. She hated herself for being this weak. She wiped her face and turned to Felice. “What do you want from me? What will make you let Damaris go? I’ll get on my knees if that’s what it takes.”
Felice’s eyes flickered. She was still in pain and for a moment, she said nothing.
Nathalie started to kneel.
“Nathalie!” Damaris saw what was happening and her eyes filled with panic. She burst into tears. “It was me, Lance, it’s my fault. I know I messed up, okay? I’ll stay away from Felice from now on. I’ll just keep my head down, do what I’m told... Just leave Nathalie alone. She loves you so much. How can you do this to her?”
She was sobbing and trying to break free, but the bodyguards held her firmly in place.
Lance’s eyes narrowed. He stepped forward and grabbed Nathalie by the arm. “Who told you to kneel?”
Lance gripped Nathalie’s shoulders, staring at her pale face, seeing nothing but distance in her eyes. “You’d really rather get on your knees for her than make up with me?”
“Yes,” Nathalie said clearly, every word steady.
She was done.
All those sweet memories. All those eight years she loved him. She was letting it all go.
“You don’t love me anymore?” Lance’s voice sounded dry, like he almost couldn’t get the words out.
“Yes.” There was no hesitation, just her quiet certainty.
He shook his head slowly. “I don’t believe you.”
