The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 45

Her vision was blurry and she felt a gentle warmth brush the corner of her eye, wiping away a tear.

The air in the hospital room was thick with something intimate, their chaotic breaths still hanging in the atmosphere.

Lance scooped her up and settled her back onto the bed. He disappeared briefly into the bathroom, then returned with a damp towel in his hand.

He reached for her leg, holding it gently.

“Can you stop going after Damaris now?” Nathalie asked, her voice low and raspy.

Lance paused, staring at her. His dark eyes stormed with emotion. He clenched his jaw. “After everything you’ve just done… not letting them go would just be cruel, wouldn’t it?”

Nathalie shut her eyes. There was still sweat at her temple, her eyes were red at the corners, and her breathing came in shallow bursts.

After everything that had happened between them, her cheeks showed a touch of pink, making her look soft and lovely in a way that seemed both fragile and real.

Lance cleaned her up gently, then climbed onto the bed beside her, pulling her into his arms. It was what he always did, holding her close, as if he could somehow make her part of him.

But Nathalie only said quietly, “What’s the point? It’s not like I can have a baby.”

Lance’s arms pulled her tighter. “So you want a child?”

She didn’t answer, just focused on catching her breath, keeping all her emotions locked inside. She knew he was pretending not to hear the hurt in her voice, and for a moment, exhaustion just swept over her. It was like her heart had been pricked with a thousand tiny needles.

When she’d recovered enough, she gently pushed him away and got up to leave.

Lance’s brows knit together. “Where are you going?”

She fixed her clothes, her expression already cold again. “Everything’s over now. Why would I stick around? Wouldn’t want to interrupt you and Felice while you get closer.”

“Nathalie!” Lance couldn’t stand the sarcasm in her voice. “I’ve already told you, there’s nothing between me and Felice.”

Nathalie smiled, soft but brave. “I’ll find another one. I’m not afraid of a little setback.”

Damaris nodded, determined. “We’ll deal with it together. But first, let’s get some food in you. You look exhausted, I’m worried you might faint right on the street.”

She hesitated for a second before asking, “You were in there for so long. What really happened? He didn’t hurt you, right?”

Nathalie remembered the scene in the room, that swirl of hurt and shame, and her eyes flickered with pain before she forced a smile. “You know what? I’m dying for hot pot.”

“Say no more, I’ll take care of it.”

...

A little head peeked into the hospital room. Jasper glanced around, saw it was empty except for Lance, and walked inside. “Lance?”

Lance turned at once, his face so cold that it made the boy freeze in his tracks.
