Nathalie could hear the underlying helplessness in his voice. Her constant wariness was clearly hurting him.
But given everything that had happened, she couldn't afford not to be cautious.
Fabian, someone she had known for years, had tried to kill her. It was incredibly hard for her to blindly trust anyone right now.
"Alright, I'll keep that in mind. It's getting late, I should get some rest. Goodnight."
Nathalie offered Freddy a brief, polite smile before turning and heading back into Lumina Grand.
Freddy watched her walk away, a faint trace of sorrow flashing behind his glasses.
His grip tightened on the business card in his hand.
As a cool breeze swept past, his solitary figure seemed to carry a heavy aura of loneliness and desolation.
...
Nathalie made her way to Sophia's room.
The girl had already eaten a bowl of noodles, and some color had returned to her pale cheeks. She sat on her bed, hugging her knees to her chest, still looking deeply shaken.
"Nathalie."
Seeing her enter, Sophia sniffled, her eyes welling up with fresh tears.
Nathalie sat down beside her and asked gently, "What exactly happened?"
Sophia bit her lip, looking utterly miserable and ashamed.
Sensing her hesitation, Nathalie didn't push. She would listen if Sophia wanted to talk, but if not, she would let it go.
Thank God a fight had broken out in the bar, giving her the chance to slip away in the chaos and run into Freddy.
Otherwise, she couldn't even bear to think about what would have happened.
After crying for a long time, she finally managed to calm down. With red, puffy eyes, she looked up. "I owe Freddy my life. If it weren't for him, I would have been destroyed... Nathalie, I don't have much to offer, but I really want to treat him to dinner to say thank you. I don't have his number, though. Could you ask him for me?"
She paused, adding nervously, "I'm worried if I ask him myself, he'll say no. Nathalie, could you please help me? I just don't know how else to repay him..."
Nathalie initially wanted to refuse, but looking into those swollen, tear-filled eyes, she couldn't bring herself to say the words.
She stayed silent for a moment before finally nodding. "Alright. I'll help you."
A weak smile broke through Sophia's tears. "Thank you, Nathalie. You're so good to me."
Nathalie patted her shoulder. "Don't think about anything else tonight. Just get some rest. My grandmother is still worried about you, so you need to be well enough so she doesn't fret."
