The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 608

Hearing the doctor's grim diagnosis, the last trace of color drained from Nathalie's face. She stared at Lance in absolute horror, her lips trembling, utterly incapable of forming a single word.

"Don't panic, he's just trying to scare you. I'm not poisoned, I just didn't treat it in time, so it got a little inflamed." Lance hated seeing her so terrified, but a selfish part of him thrilled at the depth of her concern. He gave her a reassuring smile, trying to anchor her.

The doctor gave him a weird look before crossing his arms. "Go to a big hospital. I run a small clinic; I can't handle this kind of complication."

Lance's tone went flat. "Just give me an anti-inflammatory shot."

The doctor frowned, exasperated. "I literally just said I can't treat this, you—"

He didn't finish the sentence. He accidentally locked eyes with Lance.

The man on the bed looked violently ill and deathly pale, but the aura radiating from him was utterly freezing. He possessed an air of absolute, ruthless authority. With just one cold, dead-eyed stare, an invisible, crushing pressure flooded the room. The doctor felt a genuine shudder rip through his soul.

This was not a man he could afford to piss off.

The doctor instinctively wiped a layer of cold sweat from his forehead, stammering, "I... I can give you the shot, but... if something happens to you, it's not on me. You demanded this. I advised against it."

"If I die, it has nothing to do with you," Lance said coldly.

The shot would suppress the symptoms temporarily, and right now, that was all he needed. He couldn't afford to collapse. If he went down, who would protect Nathalie?

The doctor began prepping the IV, his movements overly cautious and tense.

Nathalie stood off to the side, completely silent, watching until the needle finally went into Lance's arm. Only then did she speak. "I'm... going to find the restroom."

Lance immediately turned to Nicol. "Follow her."

He paused, then added, "Keep your distance."

"Uh..." Nicol scratched the back of his head, desperately trying to figure out how to navigate the question.

He had promised Lance he would keep his mouth shut.

"First of all, you are my bodyguard. I am the one employing you. You were practically raised by Adelaide. Do you really want me to tell her that you're a two-faced traitor?"

"No way!" Nicol panicked instantly. "If Adelaide finds out, she'll definitely chew me out. I don't care about getting yelled at, but what if it makes her sick with worry?"

His panic was entirely genuine.

"Then tell me the truth. How exactly did Lance get hurt?" Nathalie's tone turned freezing, demanding an answer.

"Ugh... fine, I'll tell you." Nicol wrestled with his loyalty for another second before realizing the secret was already blown. There was no point in lying anymore.
