In a jungle this pitch-black, Nicol actually managed to hit his target from that distance.
Nathalie's eyes widened in sheer disbelief.
She held her breath, suppressing a surge of adrenaline.
Nicol squeezed off two more shots, but this time the enemy was prepared. No muffled groans followed.
"Move."
He lowered his voice and quickly took the lead, charting a path through the brush.
Nathalie didn't hesitate, scrambling to keep up with his rapid pace.
The surroundings were suffocatingly dark. With the pursuers closing in from behind, she felt like she could no longer hear the hum of the insects. Ignoring the branches scraping at her skin, she kept her head down and pushed forward.
The jungle was vast, a tangled labyrinth of limbs and vines that completely disoriented her sense of direction.
Nicol led her deeper into the thicket, her own ragged breaths echoing in her ears.
She had no idea how long they walked before Nicol finally came to a halt. He scanned the area and whispered, "Let's take a quick breather here. I'm going to set up a few makeshift traps."
Nathalie nodded. "Okay."
She pulled out her water bottle and took a sip, trying desperately to calm her frantic breathing and racing heart. But almost immediately, the prickling sensation of being watched washed over her again.
In the utter darkness and silence of the jungle, the feeling of an unseen gaze was overwhelmingly intense.
Nathalie whipped her head around, her heart vaulting into her throat.
Someone had caught up.
They had found her!
She gripped her handgun tightly, a cold sweat breaking out on her forehead.
About ten seconds later, the eerie sensation vanished just as abruptly as it had arrived.
But Nathalie didn't dare drop her guard.
