Nathalie flattened herself against the earth, too terrified to even twitch.
The closest bullets ripped through the air just inches from her head.
Thankfully, they had chosen excellent cover, and their silhouettes were completely concealed.
Nicol was constantly shifting his position.
He moved rapidly, firing back into the trees every time he found a new angle.
Every time he pulled the trigger, another target fell.
Nathalie remained motionless, carefully raising her head just enough to peek through the brush.
Dust and smoke hung in the air, and the chaotic crunch of boots on twigs was inching closer. They were severely outnumbered.
Nathalie's heart plummeted.
Just then, one of the mercenaries glanced in her direction. Her stomach dropped, and she immediately squeezed the trigger, firing a shot straight at him.
Her recent target practice hadn't been in vain. Her aim was solid, though she couldn't hit a fatal spot.
But firing that shot instantly exposed her position.
Luckily, Nicol was there to provide covering fire, drawing their attention back to him so they didn't dare rush her location blindly.
After all, the mercenaries still had no idea how many people were waiting in ambush.
It didn't take long before Nicol ran dry on ammo. Nathalie managed to wound two more men from her spot.
But impossibly, even more reinforcements were pouring out from the tree line.
Nathalie frantically scrambled to a new position, checking her magazine. A fierce determination flashed in her eyes.
However, a split second later, she felt a terrifying, icy stare lock onto her.
She jolted, snapping her gaze upward to see a man in full tactical camouflage perched on a thick branch directly in front of her.
He wore a helmet, his face painted with greasepaint, and his rifle was aimed dead at her. He was staring down at her with cold, indifferent eyes.
It was over.
Nathalie's heart slammed against her ribs.
She was made.
